What Do You Think Prince Means By 'Tourists' He uses the phrase 'Tourists' negatively on some of the earlier albums, any interpretations or more examples of when he says it? I believe its on atleast Sexuality and Lady Cab Driver.. Personally . I think we are all Boring with No Lives cause all we do is talk about Prince,Criticize and Gossip. I need a Horny Man is what I Need and probably so do most of yas. We are Sexually Frustrated what we R... Amen..!!! - zelaire

Thats' always thrown me for a loop myself, I remember being like, 9 and hearing "sexuality", and thinking "gee, what's his problem with tourists?"
I still don't know what he's talking about- no uncommon when it comes to prince. ~KiKi

"Tourists, with 89 flowers on their backs, inventors of the accu-jack". - this is condescending in that these folks aren't REALLY into sexuality - exploring all that is sexual - they're more into doing their own thing all by themselves... "they're all a bunch of double drags, who teach their kids that love is a fag." I think he's referring to those people that are posers - not fully into the new wave scene (this is back in 1980-1982) and there was a HUGE movement of all these preppies trying to go new wave - they'd go out and buy the clothes, the sunglasses, whatever, but when they got home, they put the izods on and the loafers, etc. You know the type, the same kind of folks are around now, they'll dress the part for the party, but they ain't REALLY that committed. POSERS, I suppose. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

I think Prince is using the term "tourist" symbolically. A tourist is someone who visits exotic or unique places and imbibes the atmosphere without really being a part of it. Tourists take pictures and buy souvenirs, but are not entrenched in the cultures they visit.
I think Prince is referring to people who only jump on the bandwagon. They will observe new ideas and innovations but will not accept them as anything more than a passing fancy. Prince is calling for a "new breed" of people to "stand up, organize." Tourists are simply there to observe and enjoy.

POSERS, I suppose. Remember the movie "Valley Girl" in what, 81 or 82. That "totally" reflected what was happening culturally, in a Hollywood way, but it was very very close. Nickolas Cage was the REAL NEW WAVER, not the Poser or the Tourist as they said in Uptown. It's true about that still happening. There are a lot of closet Gothics here in LA. But the real ones, are ALWAYS gothic, now when they go to the gothic clubs. Moonbeam said: I think Prince is using the term "tourist" symbolically. Very nice clarification, although not official, I see the alluding in the word "tourist" and "inventors" now. It makes sense of what Prince was talking about. I think that that is what made Prince such a great individualistic iconoclast, his use of words amongst other things.

"Weekender" is a pretty common term around where I live.
You know the type - works in a bank monday to Friday, wearing a suit and tie. When the weekend comes around they act like freaks for 48 hours until Monday comes around again - that's a Weekender.
