Prince with Esperanza (Who wouldn't want to be a butterfly in a park when these two super talented souls jam together)
I really hope Prince include work with Esperanza Spalding in his upcoming studio releases.
But for now I am on the lookout for photos of these two sharing stage.
Please post some if you have any.
Thanks alot !

Even if he's a monster player, Prince has a fucking lot of music to learn before he can even dream of teaming up with someone of Spalding's stature.
Collaborate on a couple of songs on wax? Well, maybe. It'd be good for her because of the exposure it might give her and it'd be good for him to have a real talent working with him.
So, even if it looks like a win/win situation, I'd still rather listen to each SEPARATELY and doing their usual and very different thing.

^I have other resources for my 'serious Prince' fix. I come to the org just for fun.
But what has that got to do with my statement or with your stunned smiley?

Your comments have a way of doing that 2 me...............

i think she should have done the bet tribute & left it at that. i don't feel any real chemistry when they perform 2gether, it's like they're not in the same zone

I don't get why people r constantly ribbing Prince for how much he works with other good musicians. The fool is busy with his thing and other stars r busy with their thing, U can't constantly b in the studio with other ggreat musicians...they're busy too. I think his level of wok with other greats is appropriate...for the most part. If he DID run around constanly recording with these other great musicians, U'd all say he was leeching off of em. so what ever.
He performs well live with others but he got a bit of a control issue in the studio and he usually avoids that whole situation which I think is great. Being a control freak in a crazy biz is how he got where he was and avoided bad influence...usually...DAMN U Larry...lol..(j/k)

Gorgeous and Beautiful
How I would like to see pictures of the two legendary artists, Prince and Esperanza, in one pic while working their craft.
They had quite a few appearances together....Is there any photos existing out there ?

me too. Just because the MANY/COUNTLSS styles prince has an expertise in, practices, employs, has been exposed too may not be in the fore, it's not due to a presence of ignorance. It seems to me that Esperanza is well rooted in a genere, not many. Not a bad thin at all. But its a king of 1 vs jack of all(many to be honest). They're both face cards worth 10 pts.

I actually like Esperanza, but just one question for the trained musicians here on the Org....What exactly (in a technical sense) makes ES such a great artist? I'm not a musician so I don't really have any clue about the technical things that would make her stand out from any other jazz student. It seems like she got tons of recognition very early. I mean, a sophomore in college gets a gig at the White House? Just curious.... Trolls be gone!

She is a virtuoso on the bass, both stand up and electric. Her style of traditional jazz is not my cup fo tea (I prefer melodic quiet storm style jazz), but you can appreciate the serious talent and skills she has. She has a nice singing voice too. I imagine her appeal is because she's a young person playing that old school style of traditional jazz and doing it rather well.
The highlight of the 2 performances I saw when she opened for Prince was her version of Can't Help It by the Jackson Five. Prince showed up on stage during it to play an amazing jazz guitar solo.

- Well, I agree and disagree. In fact, jazz is very hard to play for those who arent used to play it. Prince did some works influenced by jazz but didnt go as far as a jazz player. But, musically, they are AT LEAST on the same stature (Prince even higher, IMO). Prince is a monster multi instrumentalist, producer, arranger, and a great songwriter in his own right.
On the other hand, if Esperanza plays in his territory (funk, R&B, soul, even some jazzy flavour) everything will be fine [Edited 5/19/11 17:45pm]

virtriol is correct. Sorry. Prince is highly awesome at what he does, but what he does is not even in the same ballpark as what she does. I'm not talking better or worse, it's just different. She could get into Prince's world and fit in flawlessly. If Prince got into her world, he could provide ambience AT BEST. So what? Music isn't a competition and Prince is not a god at every style. Some are, he is not. I love Prince and I like his songs. He's done a lot and done it well. In his arena he's better that everyone else. His arena is merely one of several, though. I'm a schooled musician and I know how to speak the language. Prince makes inspired music because he does what he knows. Some people know a lot more. It's just fact.
Jamming might be okay. It depends. Stylistically he's pretty limited on the guitar. He can sort of rock and he can make some quasi-jazz noises, but that's it. He's awesome in the studio and playing over harmonically simple vamps. He'd drown in a real jazz situation.

How can you say he'd drown in a jazz situation? Have you seen what he does in the studio or in rehearsals? Quite a few jazz enthusiasts have a very arrogant attitude towards those whom they feel are trying to intrude on their purist territory, disparaging those such as Prince who has his own take on a funk-jazz fusion. Prince has never professed to being a jazz musician and has always attempted to incorporate elements of many genres of music into his own style. To belittle his extensive contribution to music (far greater than the indisputably talented Esperanza's) as harmonising over simple phrases displays a pretentious attitude that complexity in music is the benchmark of quality and the sole domain of an exclusive set of pure jazz practitioners. Prince's grasp of complexity (e.g. end of 'Glam Slam') and simple rhythmic/melodic structures (e.g. Head; Raspberry Beret) is quite a rare talent and the most memorable works of many artists (e.g. Beatles, Bob Dylan) are not necessarily complex but in their own right justifiably profound. Sometimes it's knowing what to leave out that matters, as jazz legend Miles Davis commented about Prince's use of silence/space.

Esperanza is very talented. She is an example of what this world needs. More real musicians, and better role models in the music world!
Example: watched American Idol last night.
Lady GAGA - legs spread, pretending to have sex?, jumping off a cliff. (family entertainment?)
Beyonce - "make love 2 me" - (family entertainment?)
I NEVER WATCH THIS SHOW - WATCHED TO SEE MARC ANTHONY, AND HAPPY TO SEE SHEILA E. JAY-LO DANCED - AT LEAST SHE WASN'T MAKING LOVE TO THE CAMERA.
COME ON - THINK ABOUT IT - ESPECIALLY IF ONE HAS CHILDREN!
PS - I DID C PRINCE WHEN HE WAS ON!

I personally think you all should stop talking about music and musicians.
Stick to hairstyles and girlfriends and boyfriends.
Not very many of you even the so called schooled musicians know what you are talking about.
You can not back up any of your statements with one iota of evidence.
You are purely hearsayers, naysayers and doomlayers.
Prince has plenty of Jazz chops.......there is no such thing as smoothwavejazz it was invented by a program director on prozac, it has nothing to do with Jazz pure or non-pure.
Go dig out your madhouse records, or Damn You or Love 2 the 9's if you want to hear some simple jazz riffs....if you want to hear some lush jazz soloing or progressions check out Alexis de Paris, or the extended version of She Spoke to Me...."Jazz" persay has many sizes, shapes, and colors.
Prince has a handle on many genres, and is very adequate if not virtuostic at what he does.
I have been a musician all of my life and I remember back in tha day seeing Prince 2 nights in a row play the same songs for a portion of the show. That was nothing, the virtuostic thing about it was he played the exact same solos but with different fingerings. For a guitar player thats like untwisting a pretzel, mofos...Believe you me , I was there at Cobo Hall and I saw it with me own eyes. Another time it was insane to see him do "the work pt1" and play a sick solo on the guitar with one hand while harmonizing it on the keyboard simultaneously with his other hand...nuthin but a trick to him at the time....sickening to real musicians. Kinda like Elton or Mozart playing the keyboard upside down or behind there back....Real musicians and virtuosos know their instrument...intimately. Think it's easy? Try it sometime...wait a minute just try to think about it....ugh my left hand is doing this with pull offs and hammer ons whilst my right hand is up a 3rd on the keyboard hold on...wait a minute ...What Key am I in??
Real musicians just know .... they don't have to fight about it on vlogs, blogs, tweets, or watevers..nevermind...
I just get sick of reading peoples comments when they write without really thinking...kinda makes me wish i could just sit on the stoop and play guitar and watch the cars go by.
If you have something musical to debate...don't hesitate

Prince is very influenced by Jazz, you are right. He is all about improvisation! I really don't think you can categorize him either. He does it all! Peace!
The scary thing is there are not many artists like this anymore, at least ones that are in the limelight! There are plenty of talented "Real Musicians" that don't get the attention they deserve!

The problem is, Vitriol, Graycap lives in La La land, a place where Prince is by far the best musician to have ever step foot in Earth. Therefore, any statement that goes against such line of thought is viewed by him/her as a "betrayal" and "intelectual mistake". Ask Graycap if Prince is better than Mozart, Chopin, Schubert, Bach and Beethoven, put together, and he/she will answer you a "yes" with captain obvious' tone.
It's called being delusional, something Gray embodies with pefection. It's worthless trying to have a debate with him/her. Don't bother. Anything that might go against Prince being the God of music will be received with idiotic smiles and anger.
