Mystery is outdated. People want to know what goes on BEHIND the curtain because they know there IS a curtain. People know things are not what they seem in the land of smoke and mirrors. Mystical mumbo-jumbo is a thing of the past. Fantasy is great in limited doses. Suspending one's disbelief for a time, (say, the span of a crappy Hollwood blockbuster) can take your mind from the troubles of the world and help recharge your batteries for the real work.

Kesha is no more an artist than Larry Flynn. Entertainment has it's place and so does art. Occasionally the two overlap. Believing an entertainer is an artist is a waste of time and time is short. Believing ANY person to be a mouthpiece for a deity is dangerous and stupid.

Mastery is the result of hard work and constant struggle. Belief in magic is SOMA.

I suppose it was English, but you might want to revisit your definition of "clear thoughts."

I agree with most of what you say, especially this bit:

is a bit of a grey area. As it stands, I do agree with the statement as I think it was intended, and indeed Kesha is an entertainer, not an artist. On the other side of the coin, Prince (for want of a better example) is primarily an artist, but also an entertainer.

But the waters do get murky.

Many people (I'm not one of them) would argue that Beyonce is an artist. There's no doubt she can sing, so there might be some merit in describing her as an artist.

But - to me, if you're the headline act on the pyramid stage at Glastonbury, and you choose to do a dance routine with your dancers rather than actually sing the chorus to one of your most popular songs (leaving that seemingly onerous task to your backing singers) then you've immediately lost the right to be considered an artist (and along with it the right to perform on a main stage at Glastonbury) and can only be considered an entertainer.

And then we've got Lady Gaga. Well that seems like a no-brainer - she's obviously all about entertainment. But then there's no doubt that she's a competent musician and singer, and like many others we would call artists she can compose decent melodies and write crap lyrics. So she might be considered an artist. Or maybe she'll only deserve that accolade if she has staying power.

I'm not sure there's any salient point to my rambling, but I guess if there is one it is that there is no clear divide - Art is entertainment; every entertainer has artistry, every artist is entertaining.
