Unreleased 80's videos

I know there are tons of unreleased videos from the 90's onward, but does anyone have valid information on unreleased videos or video projects up to 1989. I'm not counting filmed concerts or rehearsals -- I'm talking about things such as:

"Second Coming" film

Full band "I Wanna Be Your Lover" clip

"Bambi" video

I always assumed that "Automatic" as well as "Let's Pretend" were officially released although I wasn't aware of them until maybe 10 years later...

Yeah, those 2 were officially released.

The Second Coming was basically Prince's hometown concert at the Met Center on 7th March '82, which was filmed by Chuck Statler.

Chuck also shot footage of a "staged" interview with Prince and John Bream backstage.

Prince then decided that he wanted to develop the film into a "drama documentary" with scenes in between songs.

Scenes were filmed at Prince's house with Susan Moonsie and others in their underwear.

There were originally plans to get theatrical distribution for the film, but Chuck fell out with Prince who wanted to shoot scenes over and over and also communicated very little with the director.

Chuck described the scene shooting as "48hrs of madness."

After their falling out, Prince decided that he did not like the film and it was never released.

There was also a short film called Hard Life, which was shot in early 1987.

The full title was A Twisted Tale About Two Bums Living The....Hard Life. It uses music from Madhouse's "8" album and seems like an extra long promo for that, but apparently there was "no practical use whatsoever" for the film.

It has a cast of Wally Safford, Greg Brooks, Cat, Jill Jones, Miko, Eric Leeds and Matt Fink's mother. Prince is not in the film. Prince's dad made a brief appearance.

The film is credited as being "misdirected by Prince."

It too remains unreleased.

^ info from The Vault.

There was never an official video made for Bambi.

Though as mentioned in this thread that the Automatic and Let's Pretend We're Married video's exist, they have never been made available on a commercial release.

Let's Pretend and the full length unedited version of Automatic (as well as other early 80's video's) are available on Fullasouls "PTV Volume1" release, which until released officially, is one of the only places you will find such trinkets.

Yes, I don't dispute that, what I said was that it has never been available on a commercial release, such as "The Hits" home video etc.

It's a good video, I like it, and anything with Jill Jones in it is a good thing. lol

Thanks for the info thus far.

Just to be clear I'm curious if there are any other known promo videos or video projects from the 70's & 80's that were never aired. I didn't mean released for purchase, per se -- my bad for not being clearer.

There was a thread either here on HQ debating whether the Bambi video was actually shot and completed or just considered. Between the confunsion with the Undertaker re-make and the predictable Disney comments, it was never clear if Uptown magazine's mention of the 1979 Bambi video's existance is correct or not

Yeah, way out of Prince's mind... or maybe too deep in...

But I would like to add to the Bambi controversy smile There actually was a video shot for the song, and it was only released in Europe. Reading my older Prince books (the two small ones from 84' & 85') and they mention the tale. Also the Bambi clip was mentioned in a magazine article way back when.

Here's some peices from my MQ thread started about this:

Based from a excerpt of Prince(1984) by Jim Feldman I read this in his book (page 36, last paragraph):

Prince and Warner Bros. were much more aggressive about promoting Prince than they had been with For You. For one thing, well before videos became the rage, they came up with clips for "I Wannna Be Your Lover," "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?", and "Bambi," although the last was considered controversial and was released only abroad, where audiences are considered more liberal-minded.

I'm not saying that you are wrong on this matter ecstasy, but i'm just wondering why there is no mention whatsoever of a video for Bambi in either "The Vault" book, or on princevault.com.

Also, of the promo video releases (official and otherwise) there is no sign of Bambi either, and some of these releases contain some very rare material.

I hope someone can set us straight on this.

If there is a video for this song, I hope I get to see it one day.

wink

Second Coming is not circulating.

And there seems to be a little confusion over whether Bambi exists or not.

I'd love to see the Second Coming, from the description and those stills I have a romantic notion that's it's like an early John Waters movie or something. I imagine Susan Moonsie beating off a randy giant lobster whilst Jack U Off plays in the background.

I would love to see just the pro shot concert footage, before Prince decided to ruin it (possibly) with extra scenes.

Maybe just because they are counting the things actually seen, heard, or documented, but I guess not paying attention to what's possibly locked away (ex. 3121 promo commercial).

Same here, my friend

Was the video for Paisley Park ever released? It's very low budget but the video was at least shown in Europe to support the song ( Paisley Park reached #15 in Great Britain, If my memory is correct). And what about Take Me With U? I think there was some kind of video floating around as the song was the last single from Purple Rain. I might be lost on this one though, perhaps there was no video for Take Me With U.

The video for Paisley Park is not on any official release, but two versions of it can be found on the PTV II release.

There was a video for Take Me With U. It is made up of live footage from a PR gig in Houston 1985.

Paisley Park was also aired in Canada at least once, FWIW.

And the Take Me With U video is included on the Purple Rain blu-ray/dvd.
