The cleverest song

There are clever lines in most of Prince's songs.

What though, in your opinon, is the cleverest song in its entirety?

I'm talking about songs like JIR, S and C, Raspberry Beret.
All very different songs, but all lyrically brilliant!
"London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"

"YEAH!!!"

"Yeah, well then fuck those other fools!"

I think these are pretty clever in terms of the overall concept and lyrical content. They weren't overly enigmatic but still had a twist that illustrated a deep understanding of some human phenomenon, whether it be love, relationships, world events, etc. Perhaps it's his "gemini" personality, because Prince seems very adept at examining the duality of a given situation:

If I Was Your Girlfriend - when I first heard the title alone, I freaked... but listening to the lyrics, it is clear that Prince had put his finger on something--the closeness that women enjoy in their friendships vs. the space reserved for the men in their lives

I Hate U - but I can't hate you because I love you. He really captured the essence of hate/love flipsides of the same coin of emotional intensity.

I Love U But I Don't Trust You Anymore - and I know you trust me but you don't love me anymore. Again a brilliant use of duality/reversal of words in his lyrics.

Batdance - Cheese factor aside, the use of the various movements represented by the rock guitar, the funk rhythm guitar, etc., to represent the Joker, Batman, and Vicki Vale and the clash of the three at the end were an example of P's ability to personify sounds, give them human characteristics, and have them converse with each other using just music.

The Ballad of Dorothy Parker - showcases his amazing storytelling skills. Some of the words don't rhyme, at times some stray from the poetic patterns set by previous verses to produce unexpected twists in the lyrical delivery. At points this is a poem, at others a song, and yet at others a spoken word. Endings of one phrase flow into beginnings of the next phrase with sometimes totally different meaning to that one bridge word, for example "movie" in:

My pants so wet they came off but she didn't see the movie cuz she hadn't read the book first

Joy in Repetition - the two words are "love me" and the rhythm speaks of the motions of love with the guitar solo slowly coming to the foreground like an orgasm; Shhh does this to, and I would give it runner up status (it has one of my favorite campy lines: "I'd do you afterschool like some homework" lol)

"Shhh" EDIT

Is cleverest a word? His most clever IMO is the whole concept behind ATWIAD. Coming off Purple Rain with this clever gem, really threw everyone for a loop.

a song about a beret (a raspberry one at that)
The Ladder
Temptation
Paisley Park
Condition of the heart

was this the same artist that just starred in a hit movie and took the world by storm? The cd itself was cradled in a paper sleeve inside a fold out, cardboard longbox. One that was kept and not tossed in the trash. EVEN the packaging was clever, many different colors and typestyles, personas and artwork. First no singles to be released, after PR had 6. Finally Raspberry beret in the cloud suit and the infamous cough to start. Whew! Clever indeed.

That's one of my favorit lyrics of his, the way he turns
it around "I know you trust me, but you don't love me
anymore".

The way he sings it just floors me.

The whole 1999 shows how much of a baaad ass song writer and a story teller he is.

In "Little Red Corvette":

Girl, U got an ass like I never seen
And the ride...
I say the ride is so smooth
U must be a limousine

Good point concerning Batdance. It is very clever for all the reasons you mentioned and more. If you go back and look at the actual lyrics to the song, it's extremely clever how Prince took samples from the movie "Batman" to make an artistic statement. In my opinion, it was more than just the personification of sound conversing with one another, it was use of actual samples from the movie which then became the lyrics to the song that's also clever. It doesn't seem like much, but when you consider the characters and how they interact, the song takes on a much deeper meaning.

Go back and read the lyrics. Notice how Prince adds a character to the song called "Gemini", and I say adds a character because "Gemini" is not a character in the movie. As most of you know, Gemini in astrology is symbolized by the image of two souls. The brilliant thing about Batdance is that what Prince does with the Gemini character is show two souls of the same being that are fighting each other. It is a classic battle of "good versus evil". The character "Gemini" which consists of the two souls (good and evil) represents Prince and his own persoanl internal struggle to do good (notice,"Prince" is also added as a character in the song Batdance). The two souls of good and evil are constantly at war with each other. And the forces of evil represented by the Joker pull in one direction, and the forces of good represented by Batman pull in the other direction.

At one point, the Joker's gang (evil/satan) says "hey, we got the power" and then the Bat dancers (good/angels) says "oh... we got the soul" "hey we got the sho nuff get off to make the devil go, go" Then Gemini says "I'm gonna kill you.. I'm not gonna kill you, I'm gonna kill you, I'm not gonna kill you etc." again this represents the constant struggle of good versus evil. And finally, after the stuggle builds and builds and intensifies to the state of near chaos at the end of the song, Prince rather calmly says "Stop" and everything stops... it's as if he'saying "ENOUGH"

Yeah, Batdance may seem cheesy, but it's a lot deeper than most people realize. Which is exactly why it is so clever.

Excellent response, NuPwrSoul. I’ll add the first one that comes to my mind after “Dorothy” and “Girlfriend”, which you’ve already broken down superbly.

Crystal Ball

Prince burying himself in his work both literally (the music) and metaphorically (the love making with his “expert lover”). As the troubles of the world outside swirl around him faster and faster and become more and more intense, so does his playing and love making. An incredible portrait of a human being frenetically focused on maintaining his sanity in an ever growing insane world. Perhaps the greatest escapism track I’ve ever heard.

Now I've got to get back to this great All-Star game.

Go Kevin Garnett!
