IMPACT of the PARTYMAN music video?

hey, i was wondering,

What was the impact of the PARTYMAN video.the song wasn't really a huge it was it? so what was the worlds reaction to the video? (the steam from the movie and soundtrack would have still been high by this point?)

To me it seems to be the only- or one of few- video where he "really truly tried"...if that makes sense. Its just fun, vibrant, mschieivieieous ( yeah i fucked that word up) and everything a music video should be.

Does anyone remember? I was just a fetus in 1989.

Without a doubt one of his better videos. I wish the song would've been sung in his natural voice.

I remember seeing the extended version of this on Video Music Box here in New York..That was the first time I saw Candy Dulfur...It was the first time I remember seeing prince have a sense of humour..even if it was as the Joker.

exactly. even that alone- prince being goofy and having a sense of humor- would have made this song and video a huge hit. dont know why it wasnt though. maybe lack of promotion

Probaby because the song wasn't all that. It was basically a 1999 retread, and most people moved on from the whole Batman craze by the time this was released. Plus, they'd already seen the whole half-Joker, half-not image in Batdance.

It was a fun video, but not the masterpiece everyone says it is. It's a movie tie-in, after all. P's never really been good with videos.

Look back at the music popular at the time. Prince was always two steps ahead or behind popular music. In 1989, he was behind it.

I tend to disagree with you there! Prince was still very popular at that time, coming off the back of the successful Lovesexy tour. Bat dance was very successful and played to death the problem was that the rest of the album in Joe public's eyes sucked. It was when Graffiti Bridge came around he was behind it...in my opinion wink

The video was great, but the song wasn't a hit. I loved watching the video though. Also really liked the Batdance video. What a great mood MTV had back then!

The Lovesexy tour was not successful, though...

That was the song that got me into Prince. I loved how random it was, not the same-old verse chorus verse etc.

I've been a hardcore fan ever since so that's a big impact on my life smile

That's one of my all-time favorite Prince videos.

I don't think it had much impact, though. Even as '80s videos go, it was low-budget, low-quality silliness. Great for a Prince video, terrible by any other standard.

Depends on the aspect. Financially it was a disaster either way!

The "Partyman" video made the people realize that the batman album wasn't as good as the overall hype suggested.

It sounds like he's trying too hard on this song. Le Grind, Rock Hard In A Funky Place, Superfunkicalifragisexy, Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic, all leave Partyman in the dust. Just my opinion.

I love the video and the song, but I'm not sure if this was the right choice for the second single.I think "The Future" or "Trust" might have done better.

I think it was a pretty high concept video for Prince, but compared to other artists at the time, it was behind the curve as they were doing this kinda thing 6/7 years previous, so I don't think it made that much of an impact, especially since the song wasn't a big hit. Shame.

Yeah I think The Future or Electric Chair would've faired better - A darker song in tone with the Gotham City would've been a smarter move IMO. Prince and his second single choices, huh *rolleyes*

A great, fun video that rarely aired here in Canada. It always baffled me that everyone went gaga over Batdance, but let this track slide.

I find it sort of funny that everyone generally agrees that P's videos are terrible. Could this be because we're all still watching them today, out of context? Because back in the 80's, I don't remember Prince's videos being any worse than anyone else's.

I think the video (as well as 'Batdance') is better than most of Prince's 80s videos.Doing songs for that movie must have inspired Prince to step up his game and do some incredible videos.

Love this song AND the video.

The chicks in it are razz and Candy is just razz razz .

One of the few times where he seems legit and not (over)acting.

The live version during the Nude Tour wasnt too bad either! cool
