No wonder Prince is pissed off, its a ridiculous rule. I am glad he is standing up for Artist's rights, he deserves more recognition for that I think.

It is a ridculous rule and P has some valid points. Too many people on this board are too ignorant to even take the time to look into before flipping out over P's comments.

I've read it. I understand it. Have understood it for about 25 years.
That being said, I still have to question if he would be so upset about this had it not been for the fact that there are people who don't have access to liner notes (and some who, to be honest, simply don't care) think that he's covering Sinead O'Connor in concert, instead of knowing that he's the one who wrote the song.
For that matter, had she not made a hit of the song, what's the likelihood that he would even perform the song in concert? Granted, he's performed "Mutiny" with the Revolution during the Parade tour, but "Nothing Compares To U" wasn't performed regularly until the 90s.

I don't believe the law works against celebrity copyright holders. I don't believe that a bit of confusion in the mind of the public about cover versions is in any way a bad thing. One of the coolest things for me is when I find a new song that I'm really into, and then discover it's a cover version. I often end up checking out the entire catalog of the original artist. I've discovered so many great songs that way. I can't think of a single instance where this process has worked against Prince. Calculate the combined sales of albums that feature a cover version of a Prince song. Chaka Kahn, Sinead O'Connor, Melissa Morgan, TLC all did pretty well with songs that were DOA at the time. Prince ended up looking like a hit making machine. Same thing with samples.
