Remember when Prince asked for bootlegs back? Did you send them? Your stories...! Remember back in 2003 when Prince asked through the NPGMC for fans to return bootlegs to him. How many of you sent the bootlegs back and my main question is, did you get any reward or anything in return? (Apart from the clear conscience!) Did you offer to pay him for them instead? Do you regret it or did you copy them before hand anyway? What are your stories?!?

I sent him back Rave and New Power Soul, with a request for a refund. I don't think he found it too funny.

I should send him the soundboard 'First Ave' show so he can see how it's supposed to be done... without excess overdubs and edits. ©

A clear conscience? Why would I feel guilty about having a copy of a song Prince copied for someone else?

Knowing that Prince doesn't want you to buy them illegally, especially if buying them encourages theft. I always felt a bit uncomfortable about it, especially as Prince is the one who made them.
When i first discovered some online I felt a bit guilty as if i'd got into the Vault without permission, I toyed with the idea of sending Prince a cheque for all the music I had heard but then figured that it could bust the fans who are just trying to help other fans and that he probably knows about it already.
However, I think this free bootleg movement is to be applauded as its not profiting from Prince but it sharing the music, hell, even he may approve of that.
I've always maintained that if Prince doesn't like bootlegging in general, the way to beat it is to set up a site to sell or release them himself. Imagine how much money and new joiners he would have made if he released the 1984 birthday concert himself through a website for example.

I personally don't approve of those bootlegs that you can buy, but I've got no problem with free bootlegs.

Its a weird double-standard isn't it...not to mind 'stealing' as long as somebody doesn't get paid...I'm with you though. Personally I wouldn't pay for bootlegs and I don't download for free; not through any moral obligation but, recently, there were a surge in lawyers writing out demanding money for alleged breaches in copyright or face court - many of the accusations were false but people paid up out of fear and claims of 'not doing it', 'it wasn't me' didn't cut the mustard....I stay away from all such sites because, if I'm nowhere near them, there can't be any confusion

This probably would be considered weird as well, but I don't care.
* I don't like audience recording bootlegs [including video bootlegs], but I don't mind soundboard / TV-Radio broadcast bootlegs.
* I wouldn't ever bootleg any officially released recordings [including concert films]

Too bad because that was really funny!
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

+1. Although I did it often in Greenwich Village pre-internet, I would never for a moment consider paying for a bootleg these days. I feel the same way about merch; I won't buy in the parking lot. I rarely buy a concert shirt, but if I do, I make sure it's the artist getting paid. "There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind."

I haven't paid for a bootleg in years, but if money could convince some collectors to release uncirculating studio outtakes or soundboard recordings, I would actually pay for them. Yeah, I know, it's completely immoral, but I don't care.
