did Prince have any "making ofs" documenting an album recording?

I was wondering if Prince or anybody had done a making of with actual in studio footage and interviews behind the album itself?

Not really, no.

The closest may be the BBC Omnibus shortish doco from 88 or 89 where Quincy and Miles talk about him and it shows a little bit of him playing in the studio.

Also the Purple Rain Special Edition DVD/Bluray has a number of interesting-ish behind the scenes extras with interviews with Wendy and Lisa, Bobby Z and Dr Fink, not in depth at all but better than nothing.

I'm pretty sure he has. He's always hiring people to shoot tours or documentary stuff with his projects. You always see bits of it here and there on his tv specials, or even long form music video releases. The recent 3121 movie is an example of stuff that he has shelved that could possible have a lot of studio footage.

The Lovesexy tour was documented by Albert Magnoli, including studio footage of recording, but it remains unseen. Clips of it were used in the BBC documentary. This included stuff recorded for Batman, from the clis that have been released.

I bet there is a pretty good document of one of the more quickly recorded albums that happened in one studio. His private stuff. Just like that Kevin Smith documentary about the Rainbow Children listening parties and celebration.

they also shot, but never released, an IMAX recording of the tour for the symbol album. I'm not sure if it was act 1 or act 2. Probably the first since it was shelved when the album didn't sell as well as expected.

he should have, but I haven't seen any. Militant was supposedly making a docu on the making of Parade. I've always anticipated that as he gets older and older, people will want to document his music more.

He was with WB at the time, they may have funded it.
