Prince invented some drum maachine sounds? Side stick you can hear on the intro of THE Beautiful Ones and whole Purple Rain album is so distinctive,when i hear it i think on PRINCE because that linn sound sounds so Prince. Was he the first to modify rim sound or not? | |

Linn drum machine. Not sure if he invented that, but he certainly pulled out and popularized that sound at the begining of Beautiful Ones. | |

Don't think he 'invented' drum sounds per se but he used the linn differently- de tuning the sounds and running the linn through his guitar effects pedals  if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

Both Prince and Peter Gabriel pioneered the use of the LM-1 Linn drum machine... Both used it in unique ways.
Prince tweaked the tunings, and also boldly used particular effects in certain ways. He also mixed the level up high, boldly EQing it, making it stand out.
Other things he did were to combine live hi-hats and cymbals with the LM-1, and I should also mention his rhythm programming, which was completely unique.
MANY folks were trying to emulate his Linn style, even after he stopped using it.
