Make It Through The Strom..remade by Sue Ann Carwell

Sue Ann Carwell released a version of the song in 1981, as the b-side of her single Let Me Let You Rock Me, but with different music

Did anyone in the world ever hear this version!?!? Her 80's album is all I have (which isnt half bad)

Well how different is it? Live drums and guitars like the circulating version? Etherial and dreamy like it too?

The vocals? Details please nod

It's available on the 2CD 'Wow' bootleg IIRC (the one with the Tamar album on it).

It's quite different. Melodically it's sang the same, but it has an almost 'AOR' sound to, almost like The Rebels stuff or Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad.

I think I'm right in saying Prince doesn't play on it at all.

^ Yep

Common time, basic drum, bass and keys backing, prominent rhythm guitar, twiddly synth motif weaves during first part of each verse and out of chorus, medium paced rocker, short instrumental keyboard break, Sue Ann sungs same melody and also provides small amount of background vocals, repeat chorus several times with ad libs ... and fade.

As Nouveau says ... more AOR arrangement - less syncopated pop feel

Yeah, I got the one version by Sue Ann Carwell. It's not like the Prince version. I love the Prince version. Sue Ann's is cool also.

I hardly understand why this version is excluded from Prince's "songs composed for other artists"' lists, including Princevault's. There are some differences but basically it's Prince's composition rearranged, not a brand new composition over Moon's lyrics. We have both versions so it's easy to compare. Prince certainly didn't agree to its release but obviously decided to let it go, probably because he had taken off Moon's credits from "My Love Is Forever" and therefore considered it was fair enough for Moon to "steal" a song in retaliation. Still, it has to be noted that Prince copyrighted the song at ASCAP, possibly to protect his rights in case Sue-Ann'd become a major act (which she hasn't).

Same goes with Jesse Johnson's "Do Yourself A Favor": it's Willie's "If You See Me" PLUS the musical content Prince had added in his 83 version and nothing else. Therefore, Jesse's writing credits for his version hardly correspond anything but the elements Prince has added. But nonetheless, this version is exluded from Prince's "songs written for others"'lists (though in this case, crediting him as an arranger would be more accurate than as a composer). Once again, Prince obviously let it go because he had taken Jesse's drum progamming for "The Belle Of St. Mark" and his writing credits off "The Bird" and "Jungle Love", and wasn't going to bother complaining about a rip-off of his work on someone else's song. It's kinda funny that Prince would then steal Johnson's title "Shockadelica", though. It's been said that Prince just thought such a good title should be used on a song, but i wonder if he was aware of Jesse's use of his work on "DYAF" at this point ^^

Anyway, i've mentionned both songs (and "DYAF"'s remix) in the discography i'm working on. Though unauthorized, both songs have been officially released, tolerated by Prince, and DO contain some musical input by him.

I dig the drums on the intro.

Besides that, not much else.
