i gave chaos and disorder to a charity shop. i have the vault but rarely listen to it. both were lazy, uninspired contract fillers.
but ironically better than the major albums that were released by him in those same 2 years.
True.
The thing I always think about the 'contract filler' thing is that this music wasn't largely *recorded* with this in mind - yes it was compiled as such, but Prince didn't go into the studio and put down When The Lights Go Down or Zannalee and think "I'm gonna record a really shit track for a WB now".
I think some fans at the time let Prince's propaganda influence their opinions of the albums. |

i dislike diamonds and pearls more than both those albums so it's not the politics that clouded my opinion. after lovesexy/batman prince seemed to lose his mystique as a songwriter. i agree he wasn't deliberately writing shit songs, it's just the way it was i guess. the vault pisses me off because it should have been amazing. we've all heard some of the gems he could have put on there, it just felt to me like he was throwing us crumbs. don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed.... |
