Any Rehearsals or Live Preformances Better Than Original?

Hello! Prince has some awesome rehearsals and live preformances of his songs! Any you think are better than the original?

Here's some of mine:

Something in the Water Rehearsal-Purple Rain era

Controversy (with horns!!!) Rehearsal-Lovesexy era

Bambi Live-Nude Tour-Tokyo

The folks from Brooklyn play da bass pretty good but the ones from Minneappolis play it like they OUGHTA SHOULD!

I like the Purple Rain tour version of "Possesed" better than the released version.

Harlepolis

Bambi - The Undertaker

And I seem to prefer most of his live versions of "Kiss" over the studio version. I don't know, he sure puts alot of pizzazz on this song live.

I would go further and say anything off the Gold Experience. The live versions of these songs made me go back to the album for a second listen.

You must mean "...better than the bootleg vocal version" lol , because no version of that song has ever been officially released outside of the tour video.

But did you know that at least two audio bootlegs of " Possessed" exist? One is the vocal version -- the upper mid-tempo rhythm guitar version that you probably find just good, but not great. The other is a much faster synth-and-Linn drum dance instrumental, and this is the version we hear in Purple Rain and the one upon which vocals are added for the Purple Rain tour. You may really like that one if you haven't yet heard it! nod

One could argue that despite not all songs working well in a live setting, the majority of songs have a better energy when performed in front of an audience.

Definitely agree with the Something In the Water during rehearsal. On the Noon Rendezvous boot smile ALso the version from his 26th birthday concert is the best ever, kills his guitar.

Then there's the Possessed and Irresistable Bitch live versions, always great.

When Doves Cry, love all the extra instrumental at the end during rehearsals and concerts

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

Ok, swap out energy for spirit. The album version is almost meandering. And add to the fact that anyone who has taken an 8th grade music class recognizes the chord progression, and it has the potential to be a skipper, I mean it almost has no hook. But watching it gave it a new dimension for me. The melody is slightly altered, but it is for the better.

Well, I don't know about chord progressions and all that, all I know is if I like something or not and how it makes me feel.

I agree about the album version, it does not do it for me either.

That's easy. I never thought St. Paul showed any passion singing those songs...well maybe he showed a little passion on Screams of Passion. But I always thought Prince's outtakes of The Family songs were better than the album. So yes, live versions with Prince singing would trump all versions of The Family material.

I thought for sure Possesed was officially released as a b-side during the Batman era. I guess I need to spend more time with my Prince records. I am familiar with the different versions. None of the studio versions rock like the video tape.

Noon Rendezvous?

I love the studio version, but I wish it was more like Prince's live version, it's just so much more spine-tingling.
