Christian references in Prince music, need info for speech!!

So people have given me a lot of flack, when I say that Prince is a very spirtual person and speaks about God in the majority of his songs. And being a speech major I decided to do my final speech this semester about Prince and his music in relation to God.

What I'm asking is for any info you know about a certain song, album, concert, interview anything that talks about God, directly or indirectly. I need evidence to support my points!

I know it's a lot out there, so gimmie what you got!!!

Thanks in advance:lol:

May you live to see the Dawn <3

I'll shock you with my lips.

For starters...

The Love We Make

Love (Thy Will Be Done)

I Would Die 4 U

Still Would Stand All Time

The Question of U

The Cross

The Holy River

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Listen to this song and imagine Jesus in the first person singing it to you.

The whole idea of The Black Album/Lovesexy being good vs evil could also be every appealing for your speech. Lovesexy (the album) is filled with religious overtures.

The Black Album is about self-indulgence, self gratification. Interesting stuff.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Except that s/he'd have to be pretty well versed in JW dogma to do justice to that one.

I was at a funeral today, and the pastor was reading from the Book of Luke. When he said, "From the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks" I almost fell out of the pew!

So "Love" quotes from the Book of Luke in the New Testament. Luke 6:45, to be exact.

Oh, and that phrase is also used in Matthew 12:34. Wow, cool!

Also, "7" quotes a lot from Revelations.

That is EXACTLY how I explained that song to my non-Prince fan friends back in 1984!

Definitely TRC is a great place to start - Last December is a particular example ("In the name of the Father, in the name of the Son...").

Planet Earth has several references, including the title track ("Just like the countless bodies that revolve around the sun, Planet Earth must now come into balance with the one, that caused it all to be; Then we'll see His kingdom come, so shall it be written, so shall it be sung") and Lion of Judah ("Like the Lion of Judah, I strike my enemies down; As my God is living, surely the trumpet will sound")

3121 has often been connected to a bible reference and could be seen as referencing a sense of spiritual enlightenment. Get On The Boat has a religious feel to it too ("Get on the boat; Get on the boat, people; Get on the boat now, we got room 4 a hundred more")

Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful has some bible references as well - effectively Prince is drawing a comparison between his actions and those of Moses (the one that "tapped on the crag").

Welcome 2 The Dawn is another - "When the light of God is the only thing in life that will redeem..."

And in Controversy he says the Lord's Prayer.

i'm redundant at this point, but my faves are God, 4 The Tears in Your Eyes, Elephants & Flowers ("love the one who IS love, the one who gives us the power, the One who made everything, Elephants AND Flowers), haven't heard anyone mention Thunder, Beautiful Loved and Blessed. Good list you have

Not a Prince song. It is a cover.

I'm aware. But the fact that he covered it speaks to his religious inclinations. He wouldn't have covered the song if he didn't at least partially believe what the lyrics said.

time flies.

The Lion of Judah

I remember when Prince released Planet Earth... many of his rock fans of this board loved the Lion of Judah. Man talk about religious overtones

He wants to be like the Lion of Judah... he wants to be like the King of the Jews... he wants to be like Jesus

Prince always has today and back in the day hit people right in the face with religion. It’s just the music used to be so good it didn't bother people so much

LMAO

For the record I though the Lion of Judah sucked... the vocal killed it for me how he sung it so weakly... rather than like a Lion

Dance... Let me see you dance

How about doing your own research instead of getting the org to do it for you? If you truly are an "obsessed" fan like your profile says, then you should know all of the songs that have spiritual references, and you can then just Google what you need about the song(s).

I agree with what the post above me says.

Why would you choose this for your speech topic when you don't know what you're talking about enough to be able to do it on your own?

^^ Everyone tends to have certain favourite/preferred/more familiar songs that stick in their mind - all of the songs listed in this thread I know and have heard many times, yet only a few of them came to mind when I read the OP's question.

No doubt the situation is the same for her. It's not unreasonable to pose such a question and invite anyone who's interested to brainstorm, share ideas, etc...

Perhaps PurpleVanity will discover a few choice lyrics from songs that she'd never previously considered in a spiritual light. Maybe a song that she'd never been drawn to before will warrant some fresh interest.

As always, if you're not interested, you don't have to post.

You could also include the perspective of Prince changing some of the lyrics over the years, fx.:

I'm your Messiah, and you're the reason why (I would die 4 U/original) --> He's your Messiah, and you're the reason why (live/Shark Tank bootleg).

The Cross (original title and lyrics on Sign O' The Times) --> The Christ (live on several shows during the 1990's and early 2000's).

Oh, blue light...

To you and other dude. I am doing research on my own, and I already know that their are spirtual references in his songs thats why I picked that topic in the firstt place. I just wanted to pick other people's minds to make sure I was not overshadowing any songs. I want this speech to be percise with evidence to back up my claims, and who better to ask than my fellow org members.

To everyone else im going to post a video of my presentation after I do it on friday, so you all can see. Thank you so much and keep em coming.
