I'm not sure what you mean by Lovesexy killed off his mainstream status. His mainstream success lasted until he cut ties with WB.

That about covers it.
Even though I love Lovesexy, I'll admit that it doesn't have the strongest singles, and the album cover didn't exactly help sales. But Lovesexy hardly killed his commercial appeal or mainstream status. As noted above, with Diamond and Pearls, Prince continued his commercial success.
What Lovesexy did, IMO, is solidy his position as a wonderfully creative and visionary artist.

batman starts off brilliantly with the future and electric chair, then after that alot of it is average. i like it but it lacks the genius and enthusiasm of lovesexy. arms of orion is embarrassingly bad. batdance is great but i've always thought it sounded like a killer b-side. definitely the album where he lost his edge. don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed.... | |

Parade may have been responsible for the poor sales for the Sign O’ The Times in 1987. The withdrawal of The Black Album may have pushed the sales for Lovesexy even though it sold more than Sign O’ The Times but sold less than the Batman album. A Soundtrack usually sells pretty well when there’s a movie hitting the theatres. | |

What "hurt" Lovesexy was the album cover. I bought Lovesexy at the local mom and pop record store and the owner asked for my ID before she would sell it to me.
