Wouldn't the last year of a decade be '-9?

When I was in school decades had TEN years. I'm unsure if this has changed now... razz

Well, they do. But counting begins at zero, not at one. That's why we say 1, 2, 3... and so on rather than 2, 3, 4... and so on. razz

And Emancipation89 put it more eloquently.

There's also the point that the 70's are usually distinguished as being years that include the number 7.

I agree, when you say 70s, you are referring to years with a 7 in their digits preferably the third, theres no 7s in 1980, so its not seventies, its eighties.

Besides Dirty Mind's raw punk funk sound is very different from the poppy discoey fluff of the two 70s albums anyway. Dirty Mind is light years beyond them.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Is that supposed to be a joke?

TEN years = 120 months

1970 January ~ 1970 December = 12 months

1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979

one , two , three, four, five, six , seven, eight, nine, ten

12 months X 10 = 120 months = 10 yrs

Keep up grandpa^_^!!

^Don't be so stupid, stupid!

Time started counting when that fucking Jesus Christ was born. And it started counting from YEAR ONE ONWARDS.

So, JC became 10 in year 10.

That's why 1980 is the LAST year of a decade that started in 1971 and that's why 2000 was the last year of a century that started in 1991 and of a millenium that started in 1901.

Perhaps a better definition would be: years that, when you say them out loud, require you to say "seventy." biggrin

Decades are from, say 1970-1979 because it doesn't make any sense to say that 1980 is part of the 1970's. But centuries are from 1901-2000. Thinking that the 20th century was from 1900 to 1999 is a mistake almost everyone seems to make.

[Edited 4/22/11 4:35am]

Although any period of 10 years is a decade,[2][3] a convenient and frequently referenced interval is based on the tens digit of the calendar year, as in using "1960s" to represent the decade from 1960 to 1969.[4][5] Often, for brevity, only the tens part is mentioned (60s or sixties), although this may leave it uncertain which century is meant. These references are frequently used to encapsulate popular culture or other widespread phenomena that dominated such a decade, as in The Great Depression of the 1930s.

Since the common calendar starts from the year 1, its first full decade contained the years from 1 to 10, the second decade from 11 to 20, and so on.[6] So while the "1960s" comprises the years 1960 to 1969, the "197th decade" spans 1961 to 1970.

A decade may also refer to an arbitrary span of 10 years. For example, the statement "during his last decade, Mozart explored chromatic harmony to a degree rare at the time," merely refers to the last 10 years of Mozart's life without regard to which calendar years are encompassed.

Thus, an unqualified reference to, for example, "the decade" or "this decade" may have multiple interpretations depending on the context.

The way we speak about the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s etc. is a cultural convention and has nothing to do with whether the first year was zero or one. It's just a way to distinguish a period of ten years and is not based on any other mathematical rule than that. It's true that "full decades" would start "one year later", but when we speak of "the 70s" we clearly refer to the cultural convention and it's not by validated by how many "full sets of ten years" there has been. That's irrelevant to the concept.

I like For You more than Prince. It's less vanilla. biggrin

I liked your joke. As org debates go, this one strikes me as particularly inane. Prince needs to release a new album or something so that we have news to discuss instead of debating when the 1970s ended.

Then, saying 'the seventies' means 1970 to 1979 (and on that regard the thread title specifies the 70s) so you're right on this one.

But saying 'the 7th decade of the 20th century' would mean 1971-1980.

Time counting as we know it knowadays (well, for the last 2011 years...) started on year 1, not on year 0. So, the year 10 was the tenth year of the first decade of the former millenium.

So I was right on that.

WTF?

That's absolutely true. There's a tendency to consider the last year of a decade as the first one of the next one.

So that makes DM by far his best album of the 70s.

When I was in school decades had TEN years. I'm unsure if this has changed now..

^ This is what you originally said. DM is your favorite album of the 70s. And then you tried to support your claim by saying a decade includes TEN years. I believe all I pointed out was a DECADE still means 10 years, and the fact that 70s has exactly 10 fucking years.

Besides the original question was RANK THE 70s ALBUMS and you said DM is Prince's best album of the 70s. Are you just trying to play dumb and pretend as if you don't understand what '70s' means?
