So I'm reading the Prince Illustrated Biography by John W. Duffy, and there's some pretty interesting info in here. Like on pages. 42 and 63, I believe, there are references to the Purple Rain and Camille turned Dream Factory turned SOTT project.

There was a thread on here recently & we all know about the "100 proposed songs for Purple Rain" statement/rumor/fact. So as I was reading, this totally reminded me. The author said that the Purple Rain LP was meant to be a double album with 20 songs, and I don't believe including the Time's or Apollonia 6's songs from the movie. However, it was cut to a single LP and the remaining songs were used as B-sides.

Then there's the 1986/1987 project for the coming SOTT album. (Don't have book with me as of now, so please don't mind possible mis-paraphrasing). It's quoted from Wendy that she, Prince, and Lisa had recorded a hundred songs together, but project stopped. Then she goes on to say that "I only wish I had tape copies." Hmmm??? So even Prince hadn't shared those recordings with bandmembers himself at that time...

I also found it intersting that Prince said himself that he didn't like the Parade album. "Other than Kiss, there's nothing on Parade I'm really proud of." Goes on to say that he recorded too fast without having good enough material to put out. I personally agree with him, see my rating of album in 1980-1988 thread

I don't buy the comments re: Parade. By 1985, Prince had oodles of unreleased songs that blew every track on that album away. He had a concept and he was, understandably, upset people didn't vibe with it. But his attempt at posthumously bashing the album is silly to me, especially when a huge amount of his fans adore the album.

And again, IDK why people always toss the 100 song figure around. Prince hasn't recorded 100 songs for an album. Any album. That's right, I said it. I think its BS and total PR.

But I agree with you on the people not vibing with ATWIAD, if that's what you're refferring to in ur other comment. It was something different and a new direction WAY other than down the PR road. Sometimes I used to think if Prince got lost zigzagging in different paths from each album to discover something new. Happened with late 90s stuff, but I guess he got back on track in mid 2000s to now

This has been debunked 100% false. Search the forum for lots on this, it's a really common (still!) fake/wrong theory.

IIRC, Prince said this at the time when UTCM was a total flop, so I'd say it was probably a way of distancing himself from the project (except of course for it's #1 single). Needless to say, I vehemently disagree.

I wouldn't even say he's got that much to be proud of where Kiss is concerned since Mazarati and David Z did so much to make it the song it is.

No, I am referring to Parade. The album was recorded and compiled in 1985.

Dump that book. It's totally outdated and, like Per Nilsen's first Documentary, it includes many urban legends that were never true, like PR being originally thought of as a double album.

And the 'skeletal songs that were handed to W&L for them to finish' story is another one that can be found only on old books. No recent -and more correct book- has mentioned it again.

I got Duffy's book fairly late and when I read it much more accurate info was already available on better and more reliable sources.

I'm not blaming him for spreading false info. There was not much info at the time it was written.

For instance, Per Nilsen wrote on his first 'A Documentary' (1990) that PR was initially intended to be a double album just because a German fan claimed to have the original 2LP acetate, which was a hoax.

1. Purple Rain was always a single album. Prince confirmed that.

2. Wendy & Lisa did have copies of a great deal of material. Unless they were lying, they told me straight up in 1988.

3. Contary to current belief, Parade was not well recieved by press or fans at the time. Its a great concept album but Prince is right when he says it has weak tracks on it. CT Parade, New Position, I Wonder U, Life Can be so nice, Do U lie are all very weak in song writing terms. Only the production saved them from obliteration.

Making those comments in 1990, I think in he was distancing himself from the album that had most Wendy & Lisa input because he was trying at the time to shed the enigma of the Revolution. In 1990, he was a bit lost musically and the press and some fans were calling for a return to form.

I also think he was distancing himself from a difficult time in his life. Losing popularity, sacking the film director, spliting with Susannah and spliting the revolution.

He was also making those comments on the eve of another film, and he wanted to drive a large wedge between this one and UTCM.

Little did we know that GB for about to make UTCM look like a masterpiece.....

Just picking nits here, but the "apart from Kiss, there's nothing on it I'm particularly proud of" statement was made in 1988. That doesn't make your argument less true, but it means Graffiti Bridge probably doesn't figure much into it, since he was promoting Lovesexy in that article (Musician magazine, 1988 [May, I think]).
