I Am So Bored With Prince at the Moment

I have been a fan since 82 and have definitely had times when I was almost at the point of not caring anymore. 1st around 88, when I didn't get Lovesexy, again in 92/93 when I didn't like the Symbol album and didn't get the name change. Again, with NPS. But somehow he would always come back with something that reminded me why I like the guy's stuff so much. A great show, a great song, a new killer album, a cool guest spot on tv, SOMEthing.

Right now I am in one of those valleys. I still love Sign o the Times, and still check the Org regularly for news, but I am starting to think he might be spinning his wheels and I am thinking is this it? 20ten was ok...but also pretty forgettable (and not readily available in the US). I am sick of him of playing these long stints at venues on the coasts. Sorry, but is it possible to play Chicago ONCE in awhile?? Last time was Musicology. His performace on Goerge Lopez was BORING.

So just needed to vent...feel free to do so as well...or tell me why you feel I am wrong. I just hope he DOES have something cookin and gets my feet movin again!

How was the George Lopez performance boring? No Prince performance is boring.

You have every right to feel bored, you have been a fan for a long time. It's ok for new(er) fans to come on and ask you how you can possibly be bored by someone so wonderful, and that's fine, but being a fan for 20+ years can get to you a bit.

As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, you could find another hobby, or you could listen to other music for a while or go and plant a tree.

Prince is probably not going anywhere for a long time, so if and when something new pops up, you will no doubt hear about it.

Older live performances and outtakes is what keeps me being a Prince fan, I have seen him enough times now for me not to care about seeing him live again, and I could not care less about his recent album output. I'm bored with the Prince of now. Perhaps that is what you are feeling. Your interest will return, i'm sure it will. In the meantime, get planting that tree. lol

since i've been a big fan for about a year and a half, i am not in your position and i can understand being bored with him.

I think you should just take a break and listen to your other favourite artists. Or try and discover new music. Maybe you can come back to prince after another six months or a year and you probably wouldnt be bored anymore. Nothing wrong with taking a break if you have listened to him alot, your interest will probably increase at some point, perhaps when he releases a new album or something.

You're bored, but you took the time to write a thread about the very thing you're with. lol

It is a little bit boring right now, because he's not pushing a crazy concept or energy outside of a nice concert of crowd pleasing music, most of which is culled from the past. (I agree, the Lopez interview and performance looked good, but was lightweight on the conceptual intensity and energy. It was just feel good music performed with a friendly conservative vibe)

A new album, or new GREAT performance on tv always refreshes things for me.

Or... a new studio bootleg that is incredible.

Maybe he should team up with some crazy new creative bandmates to inspire him to explore or prove something!

I mean back when he performed "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" amidst bandmates completely new to him... he tried to stand out with crazy intensity, and it was great.

Even another live broadcast into theaters (like he did with Musicology) of the current tour would be a cool thing!

He definitely needs to get out of "studio rehab" although I think he's pulling our legs.

Studio rehab could be amazing if it puts him in archival release mode. Maybe while Prince is bored with writing/recording new music he might revisit his "vault" recordings and start releasing some of it. Studio/live or audio/video, I don't care, just toss us a bone!

Oh, believe me I have. I am into a huge range of styles/genres...and love other artists/bands..so I have plenty to keep me busy. But its just that Prince has been an artist who is usually got something in the mix to keep me interested, and when these lulls happen I guess its sort of like..."what the heck is going on here??? Where are ya little buddy??" ya know what I mean?

So basically, you've been spoiled by his overall amazingness.

yeah prince is special since he has an outrageous number of good/great songs and is very versatile, its like having five artists in one. I've been getting into other great artists but i have yet to find one who can match Prince IMO

I do understand. I'm an old skool fan of Prince since the 70's. I can't get bored with Prince because he is an original.

Look whats out here now? So sad.eek I'm bored with rap and non-singing, tone-deaf one hit wonders.mad mad Last night, I was watching some terrible reality show with this so called "rapper" laying down his track over this beautiful piece of music. The music was hot, but, the rap was lame and didn't make any sense except to the "rapper" who was trying to "create" his music. sad I turned the channel quickly. I'm bored with "auto-tune". I tired of hearing singers who can really sing using this crazy device. I'm sorry that the "rappers" feel like it gives their "music" crediblity by using it. Look at Diddy, still a no talent trying to be a singer/rapper whatever. However, I can never get bored with Prince.

I do have one admission. I'm a little bored with PR because I'm not hearing Prince's other songs. I mean, Prince is playing his other songs, but he plays PR in every set and I think he needs to change it up more. I think if Prince would play other songs in his catalog besides PR I would fall back in love with PR again.

I agree the W2A is the bizness... yes it was my first concert but I've had "old fans" come out of the woodworks at my job. I didn't even know half the ppl I worked with were fans. We are all still raving about the concert. Some have gone lots of times, took breaks cause they became bored like yourself and went back and were blown away.

We can't expect Prince to always be that cute monkey in the circus always ready to entertain.

Take a breather, stop being so focused on Prince, listen to different music, read a book. smile

I would let go of his old albums. I have. Anything before 2000 except absolute gem favourites on my ipod. Sometimes there is no joy in repetition. I don't mean get rid of them. Just store then and get into his new music. If you continue to let stuff made 20 years set the bar for you, you're not moving forward or growing. You know it's good, it's imprinted in your memory but it won't allow space for anything new.

There's just not much going on right now unless you're in a part of the world where the shows are - it's always like this between albums. His inspiration levels do seem at an all time low though - it's just another show, it's just another bunch of songs strung together into an album - not much though behind it IMO.
