"Bambi" guitar tone!

I MUST know how Prince gets that gnarly sound. As we all know, it's become somewhat of a staple in his more rockin' songs. Did he have his DS-2 at that time? Any info would be appreciated!

I've never got a distortion tone close to one on Bambi. For some reason to me it just sounds so unique, especially when he's playing the chords.

chill..prince doesnt like men being front row, makes it hard to sing the ballads

You think so? Does anyone know what amp he was using at the time, or have any info about the recording of that album? God, his sound is so nasty but crystal clear!

Now I may be wrong..(someone correct me if so)..but from the footage and pix I've seen from P during that era (1979)..

Guitar - Gibson Dove. His humbuckers screamed on that guitar.

Stompboxes - He might have used a gain pedal to kick the amp. Some of the live b/w pix (from that era) shows a 2 knob pedal and an extension pedal connected to the amp (clean/dirty switch).

Amp - Who knows? He always seemed to hide the logos from his amps back then. But I recall

seeing a pic on the org where there was a "Mesa Boogie" old school logo (on the side) of 1 of the amps.

I wish Knut Kouppe (is that how you say it?) or Dez could spill the beans on what he bought and used back then.

Did Gibson make electric Doves back then? Is this the guitar you're talking about:

An acoustic guitar? I don't think so.

sounds like stacked OD pedals or possibly stacked fuzz/OD. Bluesdriver will not get you there unless stacked with an overdriven amp.

OK..Then someone correct me (as I asked before). The leopard skin covered electric guitar with the Gibson logo he used in 79..what's the name brand of that guitar? I know the bottom horn was cut or sawed off for possible higher fret access.

I always thought that guitar was called the "Dove". I know he used it before the Tele became his

main axe.

I think it's an L6-S Deluxe.
