I always assumed it was referencing the old game show Let's Make a Deal, which was still on the air when the song was written. Contestants would take a chance on winning what was behind Door #1, Door #2, or Door #3.

Oh, and "Door # Pants" would be what was behind his pants. I think you get the idea....

It's definitely "pants".
Bear in mind the song was originally written for Vanity to sing. |

Yeah, it's 'door number pants'.
I've always thought that was a really clever line. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

You are nuts. It's a wonderfully clever line.

I don't think it was -written- with her in mind at all, only that it was eventually -considered- for her. It wouldn't make sense for a woman talking about something hard in her pants. Moreover, him calling out his bandmembers and referencing Dez makes no sense in the context of Vanity 6.
I brought this up before about "Sex Shooter" being a song written from a man's perspective. It doesn't really make sense for a woman to liken her vagina to a gun. More like the sex shooter (aka six shooter) is a dick, right? So why would Vanity/Apples be telling a man to kiss his own dick in order to fuck her?

Yeah, that kinda makes more sense. I always thought the Dez line was something he probably just adlibbed on the spot.
Very true about the Sex Shooter thing.... I guess in both songs maybe Prince didn't give a fuck because he was all about blurring the lines between men, woman and sexual orientation at that time. He probably deliberately gave some songs written from a male perspective to his girl groups and kept songs for himself that he'd written from a female perspective, just to fuck with people and continue the androgynous thing. Genius!

I'm sayin! Even released as they are, it IS genius to have a woman sing "Sex Shooter" even if it may have originally been intended from a different perspective. I absolutely LOVE "Jack U Off" because it makes no sense to say you are jacking a girl off.
