I watched PR for the first time last week and I gotta say, he does look like he kisses a little stiff, maybe he was nervous? I mean, the guys not a trained actor. First movie ever? Maybe even Prince gets nervous...? Who knows...lol

I only really liked 2 scenes and they were both performance scenes at First Avenue. "Computer Blue" and "Darling Nikki", I kinda liked when he and Apollonia first hook up, it's kinda sorta hot in a stiff, awkward kinda way...lol

And I laughed at the Lake Minnetonka scene, even though I don't understand why Apollonia had the show her tits there....no bras in the 80's? lol

Check out any pics of Lisa Sheila Vanity Brenda Susan Wendy Cat Apollonia or any other woman in the bands and tell me who was wearing a bra as an undergarment??

I thought the movie was strong/enjoyable until the "Are You Jealous?!?!?" scene, after that everything went downhill...the Kid is such a depicable character...

the "suicide attempt" scene is pretty powerful but at the same time it shows how pathetic and miserable struggling rockstars are: it's basically do it (success) or die, can't they get a REAL job???

GF may be worse, but it's certainly less offensive than PR...

"Don't get me started...." on GB. Watching a grown man/ psuedo batman super hero pout (sp?) through an hour an a half was definately more offensive than 95% of PR.

The scenes where Jerome dumps the girl in the dumpster and Prince facing shoving Appolonia being the 5%.

Shit happens in real life....

I've always wondered how many times P practiced his backhand. When he hits Apollonia...such form!

I would say that, given that most of the starring roles were played by people with no prior acting experience, it's a miracle that the movie wasn't much worse. Subsequent efforts by those involved seemed to confirm this.

The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

the more I feel that it wasn't really a good movie falloff I mean at the time, it was electrifying..but...

the dialogue is stilted

the plot is thin..

Prince kisses in a really weird way...

I was 12 when that movie came out, and even then I thought "Prince, I don't think you're doing that right".

man do you guy just enjoy a movie?

Some of the best cartoons shows & movies are not 'realistic'

the director of the show called it an 'exaggeration' of what was happenig in life -Prince the Time Vanity6 life

It was huge, if it really was as bad or if people were as critical as some of you are of the film it probably would not have been as huge. It's a Rock Film & a Cult Classic

Purple Rain is rock film filled with almost real situations and real places & people in Prince's life (I mean even down to the cab driver to the club people just about everyone was in Prince's life/camp and from way back when) so that stuff is the glue that makes PR work and the music is Electicity.

I'm with you there: the 'almost real-ness' of it. Big Chick, Dez, Billy Sparks, Kim, Jill... If only Vanity had stayed on...

Actually, I kinda disagree there. Apollonia and her newness to his world actually made more sense than him and a woman that he was already dating pretending not to know each other. It make the love (or lust) at first sight moment between both of them that much more plausible. Remember, she was this new girl in town, hitting the big city for the first time with stars in her eyes. She's mesmerized by this amazing and electric singer on stage that's handsome and cool beyond words. I don't think we as an audience would have been sold on that moment, especially if it was with a woman we all knew he had a relationship with.

As for my overall review of the film, after my first Prince concert, I watched the movie again with a new appreciation. I thought everyone involved did an amazing job especially since most of them never acted a day in their lives. Considering how cheesy the film could have been, I thought it told it's story realistically and remarkably well.

I wasn't expecting "Citizen Kane" or Streep and DeNiro level performances. I think that's the problem with a lot of people who dislike the film. They were expecting "acting". I was just expecting a glimpse into Prince's world at that time, no more and no less. How much acting could there be if almost everyone is playing themselves? I was just happy no one tripped over their words. I loved that Prince actually could cry on cue and Morris and Jerome were hilarious. wink

It's funny to think how Vanity would have done in Appolonia's role.

The movie itself doesn't have to be great. The music is awesome and that's all that matters.
