Prince and Adam Ant have a lot in common they both had backing musicians who wrote their best songs but got no credit

28th March, 20011 - Gary Numan is interviewed for a British national paper.
In it, he was asked the following question:
Adam Ant popped up on one of your shows recently. How was that?
This was his reply:
A surprise. I didn’t know he was coming. For all his issues, he’s a very interesting bloke to talk to but he turned up at a gig having decided he was going to guest on Cars. We were about to go on and I hadn’t spoken to him about it so I said: ‘Maybe do it at a gig that doesn’t start in two minutes.’ I got told during the gig my wife had a row with him and he wasn’t leaving. We did the encore and he said: ‘I’ll just do the backing vocals,’ and I said: ‘But there aren’t any backing vocals on it.’ He came out anyway and he started this rapping thing about: ‘I’ll get you in my car...’ I’m standing there like, ‘What the f*** is going on?’ and the fans were there with their mouths open.

wow I could not finish that
it seemed like Numan offers the mic to which Adam replied he only knows the chorus, then sings the chorus "Cars!" "Cars!"
it reminded me a little of Prince with James Brown, painful My Legacy

Adam Ant was already produced by Andre Cymone on Manners & Physique. I don't remember any big hits from it, but Andre basically played almost everything on it, so there is your Prince connection.
I used to LOVE Adam Ant back in the day and until I saw Prince, I thought that there were few performers as energetic as Adam, but that was 25 years ago.

Sadly, Adam looks like Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka, which I also hated. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. maybe in the 1980s when Adam Ant was still putting out music and was relevant?

when you list the years i can't believe it was such a short period he had MAJOR success before his downfall. wild frontier in 1980 and prince charming the following year, and friend or foe the year after that. goody two shoes was the last big hit. then strip was shit and vive le rock just worse
at the time it seemed he was on top for a loooong time

that's the way it is. Most people think of Prince from 1982-1984 or maybe through Kiss. That's not very long.
Adam's path of art and image intersected for a brief time after which his image became more important and his music pretty mugh sucked.
Even Prince Charming is pretty awful in places My Legacy

Vive le Rock was brilliant then and still is! Go back and listen to it. Totally underrated album right there.
Like all his best stuff it hasn't really influenced anyone but sounds totally unique. [Edited 4/6/11 13:43pm]

Although musically great they were both lousy actors Adam Ants acting was on par with Prince in G Bridge

We're talking about a guy who released 8 albums. Not a failure by any means, but from what I can tell, only 5 of them were any good. On top? He had some big hits in the UK, and 3 Top 40 hits in the US. Some of you are talking like he is some legend. He's not Sting, don't mention his name in the same breath with Prince... He's better than Billy Ocean, but that's actually a great comparison. Billy Ocean has about the exact amount of hits as Ant in the UK, and did better in the US. I do however, admit, that Billy Ocean did not seem to have a lot of quality songs past 1983 or so...most of it was overproduced pop. Funny...Adam Ant did not seem to have much success after 1983 either...hmmm..

i'm just surprised that when you look back at it, at the time it seemed like adam was omni present in the charts for a long time, but the reality was that it was just the hits from 2 albums mainly that kept him there, then goody two shoes, and it just went downhill from there. i was a big fan at the time, and even now i still listen to the 2nd and 3rd album and sessions from around that time and avoid the other albums
and prince charming was flawed, which is why wild frontier is my fave. antrap was pretty awful, but it shows adam was embracing what has now became a huge popular style of music, but that would have been down to malcolm probably, as he was very much into early hip hop. i still remember the chat malcolm gave a couple of years ago before he died, an incredible interesting guy. i was so glad to have met him

Adam's last great song was WONDERFUL off the WONDERFUL album in 1995. The song was a top 40 hit in the US and the video was really good too. Just to bring this around full circle, the album was produced by David Tickle who engineered a number of Prince's songs in the 80s.

Ant worked with Andre Cymone to make some almost completly lame music - thats as close as he gets to working with Prince
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
he shagged vanity. i'd say sloppy seconds is closer than working with the man who reissued the same sessions a dozen times (no, not michael jackass)
