I dig the Batman album, but I think this album would have had a lot more range. Would have been a great release. |

An earlier configuration of the Rave album dated Oct 27th '88 is thought to have been (this has never been confirmed)...
1. The Voice Inside. 2. Melody Cool. 3. Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic. 4. God Is Alive. 5. If I Had A Harem. 6. Stimulation. 7. Still Would Stand All Time. 8. Elephants And Flowers. 9. Big House. 10. We Got The Power.
I think the only other known configuration is the one you have listed in your post which dates from late '88, early '89.

I think this too. I this it would've been like Lovesexy pt.2 - and that's no bad thing. The title track is, nothing special at all IMO and don't consider it worth making the focus of a project, either in 1989 or 1999. But overall, I like the material proposed for the project.
Rave and Graffiti Bridge were tangled somewhat at this point, and the earlier Rave tracklist has 'Elephants & Flowers' - which I would keep, along with The Voice Inside which I also like (reminds me of Trust and that upbeat Lovesexy 88/89 vibe).
The Oct 27th tracklist according to The Vault:
The Voice Inside Melody Cool Rave God Is Alive If I Had A Harem Stimulation Still Would Stand All Time Elephants & Flowers Big House We Got The Power
This looks like a total rough WIP to me, a collection of tracks to consider without a real order to them.
Edit: great minds and all that.... [Edited 4/1/11 6:42am]

Both configurations look good, he had a few other pieces that were made at this time like Me Touch Myself & Dance With the Devil that I could imagine a sold album with sold interesting B sides

I agree, to bad he didn't push for a double release (2 seperate albums) I like the 'dark' twin feel that the Batman project had. But I think even with his Lovesexy enlightenment Prince had a shadow over him that lent to a darker side at this time.

I was just listening to Trust, love that 'churchy' upbeat feel to it. No matter what he would have had a good choice to pick from for B sides too

I don't think either configuration is that inspiring.
I think P from the back of 88 to early 91 was a bit lost, and his work shows its. Some great tracks, but no real direction.
I think he was on a downer. Just look at Grafitti and the lyrics to Thieves. He was hanging in there. A lonely old soul.
The music world was changing at the end of hte 80's and I don't think Prince knew which way to go. In the end, he spent 91-92 trying to chase trends and getting bitter with WB about the lack of success compared to Purple Rain.
The best thing to come out of it all was that it cleared his head for the 93-95 period. To me, his last great productive period. .

Thanks a lot for the info,
I don't think this album would have been that good though. Prince 4Ever.

why?
I still haven't put it together to have a listen yet
There are 2 playlist put up here, I'll hve to try them out later

I agree actually. I think post-SOTT 80s is a bit of a hangover from the Revolution split. And after Prince decided to chase trends and incorporate cheesy hip-hop, which I think was so beneath his potential.
The guy who did Power Fantastic, a few years later he's doing Jughead, really?..... That's Prince!

I know what you mean
And just know the story behind Power Fantastic adds another jab because that was just the tip of hte iceberg

Bot of those configurations seem like mere sketches to me.
I've always been partial to "The Voice Inside" and "We Got The Power". So I wish at least one of them would have made it on a proper album release (not counting the short bit of the latter appearing on "Batdance"). If that's the same version "If I Had A Harem" that's circulating then I could have done without it. It's cool as a live blues track, but the studio version isn't very interesting.
I'm kinda happy about most of the material on the "Batman" album, but it could have incorporated a few more songs. In a way it's sad that it's not seen as a "proper" Prince album, because there's an interesting quality to the material on it that just screams "Prince". What's really missing from his official discography is a single LP that evokes the type of a "carnival" and "gospel" type of feel that many of the tracks on "Batman" and on the "Rave" project have (88-89). GB is just too all over the place in that sense.

Yeah, I still think of what the era would have been like. He was in a good vibe from the Lovesexy aftershows and as much as I enjoy the Batman album a settled Prince album would have been good, videos performances
I wonder what caused the decision for Cat & Boni 2 leave and I think he was moving Sheila E too? And she was going to do another protege album
Graffiti Bridge just burst my bubble I was visually/musically loosing my religion 4 Prince

The title track is one of my favourites ever. It represents everything i like about Prince. You just can't put a timeframe or genre on it. This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

In usual Prince fashion, many shows saw the premiere of new songs, particularly "Blues in C (If I Had a Harem)" during the Lovesexy tour.

And I'm afraid you can't (*): Prince's version of 'Good Judy Girlfriend' is not circulating and we can't know how different it would be to Carmen's 'interpretation'.
On the same token, 'Am I Without U' has never been circulating either (and I mean 'circulating' as 'out of very closed circles').
Some years ago there was up on the p2p networks a 'version' of one of the configurations which was just a fan's cut&paste very poor job: the quality was all over the place since all the versions of the circulating songs ranged from fairly good to terrible. And the cat solved the 'problem' of the 'Stimulation' instrumental not being out there by using one of the tracks from the 1977 Loring Park instrumentals!
(*) oh, and if you're sure that you ACTUALLY CAN, just orgnote me... [Edited 4/1/11 11:45am]

Original setlist looks good. I have the into/or unto dvd (can never remember which) but I like the music. I don't have if I had a harem, but I've heard it and it's a nice tune. I'd be interested to know if he actually revisted Moonbeam Levels and re-recorded it in 1988, or just had it in mind for the project, but never demoed it.
I believe the only version circulating is from the early 80s. Still would love to see him work with Wendy and Lisa again, and revisit tracks like this that were from the Revolution era, but never made the cut.
If it breaks when it bends, you better not put it in.

If he remade it today, I imagine it might have a light jazz lounge kind of feel "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

Was "Come Out & Play" recorded in the same period or was it just another Lovesexy outtake?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Never heard of it, sorry. There was Come Back 2 Me, which dates from '88, given to Sheena Easton.
Is that what you are thinking of?

As far as I know "Come Outside And Play" was recorded either during or after the Graffiti Bridge project. That information is based on the old Sabotage list for outtakes, so some of the newer sources may date it differently. I don't think it sounds similar to the material from the Lovesexy period.

^^^
You're right:
Recorded from the Larrabee sessions in October 1990 for the "New Power Generation" 12" single, Robin Power's question of "U want me 2 what?" and Ingrid Chavez's "Clap your hands and stomp your feet" segue into this song from "Eliminate The Negative" (1990 outtake). It's a fast rocking number with a catchy riff, acoustic guitar arrangements, and thick vocal overdubs by Prince.

July 27. 1988
another Lovesexy era song, I still remember when I 1st saw Prince of Paisley Park (which was basically a videography of the Lovesexy era) and Mavis talking about how this recording came about
It was performed live during some LS aftershows
****** ****** Flash, flash! CHORUS: News is comin' like a hurricane CHORUS News is comin' like a dog in heat CHORUS All of His children come take a blissy ride Live, live! One step at a time, we need a new rhyme (Alive) CHORUS Live, live! (CHORUS) {repeat parts in BG} Whoa, oh
