Apparently, the Police were called out after a bit of a melee during the Rick James/Prince, Battle of the Funk Tour on March 29 1980, when it went through Jackson, and it being the deep south, instantly assumed it was Black singers starting a riot. They soon realised it was an overreaction, but as Prince was more of a prankster then (He was all of 21) he thought it would be hilarious to start some publicity, and put the Police up to taking an official looking nugshot of him. It looks real, but don't you think . He also timed so it could be released on April 1st 1980, April Fools Day. It didn't really work as Prince was still quite obscure at the time, he only had the one pop hit and was only really followed in Black circles (This was several months before Dirty Mind dropped). This is the story I heard, does anyone else have a differet version of events. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name | |
