I apologize for my part in it. Just really disappointing someone always has to walk around saying some assholish shit for no reason trying to derail the topic. Small Club has nothing to do with The Revolution nor does the majority of Prince's career.
Anyway...
This was the first live boot I ever owned. Classic from front to back. The loose, improvisational feel of the entire show is really what I think cinches it. It feels so effortless and makeshift, but unbelievably tight and calculated. As if weeks and weeks of planning began and ended just seconds before each note was played. I love how you can hear the band whispering to each other during the show, like when Sheila asks Miko before "People Without" what song Prince was about to start. (At least, it sounds to me like she says, "Mike, Miko, what is this?")
I remember when I first got it and didn't really get that it was an aftershow from LoveSexy. The music was so different, the arrangements were so bare, compared to the LS show. "Just My Imagination" is still my favorite live Prince solo hands down. And Boni's voice is infinitely enjoyable. I never get tired of it.
Lovesexy is one of my favorite eras though... I must be biased.

I'm not a big fan of her on it either but its still considered the greatest bootleg.

I 4 1 will always favore the 1980's musicians, everyone of them in this band were a part of the Purple Rain - Dream Factory era except 4 Cat. I love her because she was a huge fan of Prince's music and designed her moves to Prince music. (Funny but Mayte was not even a fan of Prince, her mother was)
Matt Fink/Greg Brooks/Wally Safford/Eric Leads/Atlanta Bliss/Mico Weaver were a part of the Revolution though and in the Prince camp since 1983/84 Matt since 1978
Sheila of course since 1983 and Levi & Boni came in during the Dream Factory years

Apologies smologies...Fuck that...Funny how everyone is so feeling "Just My Imagination"
Just listening to A Case Of You...ahh now im into The Avenue......

I think as a lot of fans go the 8.13.1983 1st Avenue show the 6.7.1984 1st Avenue show the 1988 Lovesexy Small Club show and possibly the SOTT 1987 'rehearsal are the 4 greatest show bootlegs and you could probably add the 1st Avenue 1982 show (pre 1999) with Prince & band and the Time

Cuz Just My Imagination is on fire. How can you not feel it?
The sound on The Avenue is so dense to me (a gripe I often have w/ the Rev).

I was just listening to this whole show yesterday, I love how historic this show is, even the quality of the boot makes it more so

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Love this performance. He snuck the funk inside "Trojan Horse" and laid the city to waste [Edited 4/1/11 22:39pm] "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

Kick some ass....
Its a shame not so many people outside his fans heard this, great set from start to finish.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It's not his greatest bootleg, Still Would Stand All Time isn't very good in my opinion
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
You could also probaby add First Avenue '86, especially now that it is available in such great quality.
| |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
So what would you say is his best, or one of his best?
| |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'm not sure a casual listener would really like this. No Lets Go Crazy, Kiss, Purple Rain etc etc. Maybe one of the main Lovesexy shows would be better for that lot.

His best bootleg, not his best song.

Oh, I thought you were talking about Still Would Stand All Time.
In that case then, I like the Revelations 2.1 Bootleg, First Avenue 1983, Detroit 1986 and First Avenue 1987 the best. [Edited 4/2/11 3:08am]

It was my first, too.
I remember the first time I heard it - it was at the birthday party of a friend of mine. Her husband had copied a friend's disc - and he and another friend designed cover art for it. (The original art - if there was any - was long gone.)
So we're at the birthday party and - unbeknownst to me - my friend said to her husband, "Put on that Prince disc...and let's see how long it takes [Genesia] to recognize it." We're in the kitchen drinking margaritas...and I hear the guitar line from "Rave" in the opening Instrumental Jam. I said, "Oh, my god - that's Prince!"
Well, I was shocked because my friends - though they like Prince - give me more than a little shit about how much I like him. Of course, I had to have a copy of that disc on the spot. (I later downloaded it, myself - wanted a better recording.)
It's still my favorite boot - and Just My Imagination is my favorite live track of all time. The rest of it is great, too - except for the Boni stuff. Every time she starts screeching in Forever In My Life, I have to hit "forward." We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I love that song, but like he started doing with Rosie till now is having that Big voice via Tayler D. on this song, she messed it up and was off key, then it went into some church jam
It should have stayed quiet and simple

I don't like Boni, never have, and on this boot, her screaming till it sounds like she is going to vomit, just does my tits in. That is not singing, it is screaming.
Apart from that, it's all gold.

For You (1978) - Lovesexy (1988) = A steady diet of delicious, juicy t-bone steak with all the trimmings for 10 years!
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.
