No real reason was given. There was speculation that it was to do with a lawsuit over the name "NPG", but it was also stated that the closing of the site had nothing to do with that.

There was an official statement along the lines of "in the current form, NPGMC has gone as far as it can go".

The funny thing is that it happened not too long after Prince won a Webby award for the site and being a pioneer as one of the first major artists to sell music online.

Because a new year had started, people had paid the $ and it was safely in the bank...seems like a lit of effort to deliver what people had signed up for so they shut up shop (guess they'd run out of previously released tracks to remove anything spicy from and call new).

Bit like controversy magazines sad ending really

Prince said in 1993 that music should be free.

So he openned up L4OA.com where fore $100, you could have free music.

Then he closed that in order to help us obtain even more free music for $70-100ish

dollars at NPGMC.com

But seriously, the man is a perfectionist. You want more free music?

Well, for $77, lotusflow3r.com totally gave you more of that wonderful free music.

Look, you can whine and moan all you want, but he's given fans every oppportunity

to get free music.

Lately, they've been grabbing up his recently releases for free on their own too.

Prince fascilitates all this wonderful free music...one day, ain't nobody gonna pay

a damned thing....Don't you see how perfect his plan is?

I have always thought he shut it down because he knew the news of Mani filing for divorce was going to hit any day - and he didn't want people hashing it over in his house. shrug

Genesia wasn't that already common knowledge when NPGMC closed? I seem to remember people speculating when 3121 came out (Fury lyrics etc) was that early 2006? When did the site close? was that mid-2006? 3121 Las Vegas residency began in late 2006?

If you say it was 2005 I'll get mad! mad lol

Just somewhere in the middle,

It closed on the 4th of July, 2006.

Mani filed for divorce on May 24 of that year (the week the song "Good-bye" played in the Reflection room), but it didn't hit the papers until a week (or maybe two) after the site closed.

It was good while it lasted and for a while there I thought the free 3121 website that followed was excellent too (although of course not updated often enough as seems to be usual with official Prince sites). Since then I think Prince really has decided the "internet is dead" as far as being an official outlet is concerned.

Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

Sounds like a good enough reason to shut it down. lol

Did lifetime membership refer to human life, which is variable, or was is a virtual universe lifetime?

Meaning is not only conveyed through words but rather the unspoken message which lies between.

This was the message posted when the site closed....

"Greetings Family,

The NPG Music Club has been in xistence 4 more than 5 years. In that time we've learned a great deal from each other and about this brave new online world we have all chosen 2 b part of. The members we have been 4tunate enough 2 have join r family have truly made this the best music club any artist could ever dream of. And all the things we have been a part of 2gether -- the concerts, the celebrations, the soundchecks, the discussions and the un4gettable music -- have shown us what a New Power Generation can truly b. We thank u from r hearts 4 sharing urselves and ur love of the music with all of us. It has been a blessing.

Once the NPG Music Club won the 2006 Webby Award, discussions within the NPG began 2 center on what was next. What’s the next step in this ever-changing xperiment? The achievements of the past cannot be questioned and we are truly grateful 4 everything that has been accomplished. But in its current 4m there is a feeling that the NPGMC gone as far as it can go. In a world without limitations and infinite possibilities, has the time come 2 once again make a leap of faith and begin anew? These r ?s we in the NPG need 2 answer. In doing so, we have decided 2 put the club on hiatus until further notice.

The NPG Music Club was a first step; the lessons learned will last 4ever. Now comes a time of great reflection and restructuring. The future holds nothing but endless opportunity and we plan on seizing it wholeheartedly. Don’t u want 2 come?

Love4oneanother,
NPG Music Club 4ever

NOTE: We will be sending emales when there is an update."

Just a note to everyone never call your website after your latest album more so if your name is Prince because your onto the next one before you know it. The NPGMC was good for the music that was released, I don't want fancy bullshit graphics I want your music you little F__ker.....(you have two options for the gap either UC or UN).

It happened to the Controversy fanzine and all the other things, starts great ends up somewhat lacking and it's down to him not me or you but him (maybe the UC should fit the gap).

In my dream there's a Prince website where we can buy music or dvd's of concerts or maybe music videos (complete not chopped about with) all from the vault none of that digital crap proper cd's or dvd's I can hold in my hand I don't ask much I just want it before I fucking die.biggrin
