Hooked 11th graders to the funk today!

I teach an 11th grade class and in a lesson related to the upcoming Jewish Passover festival, I played them Bob Marley's Exodus (which got a mildly appreciative response) and guess which other track....?

.... which blew their minds! I have a bunch of music majors in the class and they were going wild, calling their mates from other classes to come in and hear it, asking me to write down the name of the song and artist (I didn't ask what they were planning to do with that info lol).

I quite often play music in class but have never had a response like that!

(I taught Raspberry Beret to a 7th Grade class last year. they liked it, but some of them kept asking, gulp, if it was MJ lol)

Do you mean you "hipped" them to the funk?

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

People, people, I played them Bob Marley's Exodus and then...

(this is a festival about the exodus from Egypt)

- I'll give you a clue, it wasn't from TRC.

I'll give you another clue - it's not actually credited to Prince or TAFKAP.

last clue - it never got an official release...

I was listening to Exodus Has Begun after reading this thread the other day, and after not hearing it for a while (but always loving it), it kinda sounded to me like the whole of TRC compressed into one song. I was impressed how I heard a lot of threads Prince would later pick up right back to here.

The word Exodus aside, how exactly did you connect this song to Passover?

I'm not sure I'd want you teaching my kids.

1. I didn't devote the lesson to the songs - they were triggers and background additions to ignite interest.

2. The song itself is actually strongly connected to the message of passover - freedom from enslavement. It raises issues about what we consider slavery and what forms of slavery persist, including corporate slavery. HOWEVER, since I teach in Israel to Hebrew-speakers, this in-depth examination of the song's content and context was beyond them and I just wanted them to pick up the meaning of "exodus" and that the Israelites' exodus from Egypt is referenced in other cultures as well.

3. i hope that you were being tongue in cheek, because that is a VERY nasty comment otherwise...

(and I would've thought that any Prince fan would want the kind of teacher who plays a track like this to his/her students...)
