CD in 21 Nights book

How is the CD in the 21 NIGHTS book? I see several for sale on Amazon, and wondered if it is any good. The aftershow CD on ONE NIGHT ALONE LIVE is ok, but left me wanting more. What are the tracks on this one?

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

And it's an amazing CD in all ways. Highly recommended.

You can buy the book in used book stores with the cd for like 3 to 5 bucks in the US.

Just get it yourself and make up your own mind.

But please do not pay a lot of money for this, (depending where you are of course) it's currently being practically given away.

This CD is far from crap. It is just incoherent as Prince has used parts from different aftershows. he should have gone for a full one.

But there are fab jams on it. I don't like the long slow "I've got a great sense of humor section".

Apart from that it is all good. People would love it if it was a bootleg with a crappy sound. biggrin

Rock Steady
Alphabet Street (THE highlight of the disc)

The One

what's up with the last 30 seconds of the album though?

Exactly. This highlights exactly how Prince has lost a little touch with reality and is behind the times with regards production.

You can't knock him as a musician or entertainer (or even distributor of music). But this is just awful, dated, self indulgance.

It's quite boring, and has very few interesting moments on it.

It's a completist's item.

I felt the same way with One Nite Alone... LIVE aftershow disc. Really. I hated that piece o' crap. Yes, the band is mostly good. Rhonda is fantastic, Blackwell is good, (although his feel doesn't work for me) but everyone else is pretty boring. Prince also likes to do a lot of stuff live that is great fun while you're there, but really boring on a CD, (and usually on video, too). There's something really stale about it. Prince sounds bored to me, whether he is or not.

I'm tired of generic funk vamps that go on for way too long. Maybe it's cool to see in the venue, but not on CD.

Really, there are complaints about the last 30 seconds of an album? Anyway I myself don't listen to it very often...as of because there isnt really much to go on, and unfortunatley there are bootlegs tat caught better listens of some great performances. It was nice to hear that is for sure. I loved the book, the pictures and portey were nice. The album was hit and miss. One Night Alone Set was more thought out and packed a punch. I am wondering why he left off alot of stuff he could have featured on the set. Rock Steady..done enough, Baby Love, Misty Blue, Indigo Nights...meh. All The Critics Love You In London..is nice however it is merely a jazz jam that goes on and on bored

Iguess there just were not enough exciting highligts to keep me pumped after Begging Woman went off.

I'm just commenting on why he felt the need to stick a load of women gushing over him "honestly.. i'm like... so happy i might cry" for example over the batdance song. it is dreadful. i'm not judging the whole album on it... it is just so lame it's untrue.

Illuminations

I opened the book, looked at the first page... put the book down. Put the cd in the player, pressed play... pressed next, next, next, next... took cd out, placed it back in the book and put the book in my own vault, and like Prince's music in the vault... will probably never see the light of day again. Sorry

This was my experience with the book and CD too --- exactly the same. So damn boring and uninspired...and the horns don't even sound tight like they used to.

I agree. The versions of these songs are some of the best I've heard him play. And the 3121 is better than the album version IMO. I actually think that book is worth owning as well. But like a couple of others said, don't pay a lot for the book. I think it's going pretty cheap in retail land right now.

Just to preface my opinion, I'm not hyper critical of prince's current output but just try to enjoy it ! smile

I bought a copy of 21 nights for 4 bucks at Borders!! I've looked thru the book multiple times and I think the pictures are great although most are obviously staged. The cd is a bit too jazzy (lots of horns) for my taste but I think its well worth a listen. Prince does quite a bit of talking which is interesting. I say BUY IT and just relax and enjoy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol

bears very little resemblance to the real experience. I was lucky to get to 4 aftershows and he was mind blowing especially on that last ledgendary night.

For me the book is a waste of paper but I really like the CD. In fact, this thread has made me put it on again. I'm helped in liking it by the fact that I was at both the shows, which this disc draws from. I have the full shows from other sources but like the soundboard quality on offer with the disc.

Great memories of a great summer. cool

RIP sad
