Prince's most underrated song...

...is clearly any random fucking song a random fucking person chooses. We've heard ATWIAD is underrated, Purple Rain is underrated, Parade is underrated, 1999 is underrated, Rainbow Children, etc.

It doesn't matter. If no one in the world loves this album or song as much as you do, then that's just too bad for them! Their loss, right?

So what is the obsession with trying to point out Prince's lost genius? It hasn't gone anywhere. He's still a genius. He just tends to use his genius in ways a portion of people don't agree with. Why does it matter if your internet peers see the genius?

Is it that people are scared Prince's feelings, the album's feelings, or the record store clerk's feelings will be hurt? It couldn't be that people simply want more people to like something given its human nature to abandon things that seem too popular.

Really its just them trying to feeling exclusive and elite from the rest of the board for mentioning an unpopular/random song.

we all can't be self-assured like you Spin smile

This is kinda out of topic, but I don't even know how western critics 'rate' a song. Do they really look at how many instruments were played, modulation, how much emotions were put into voice and all that? At least from what I read from rolling stone magazine, I confidently doubt it...

When it comes to nowadays music, isn't 90% of 'rating music' based on their personal taste? I grew up listening to classical music and personally, nowadays music (songs that are about 4 minutes long, and if you cut the repetition part, pure melody is less than 90 seconds...) is always stuck in the same form...Whether it's rock or pop or r&b...I guess hiphop is even shorter beause it's mostly based on the beat and short amount of samplings...

Even if it's a song that has great reviews by fancy critics...if you don't like it, you won't care to listen to the song...And even if it's a song that's hated by everyone, as long as it's good to your ears, you'll listen to it...

Thanks ^_^! Rating music only by commercial success...I think that's just as bad as ratings that are 100% based on personal taste cry

Perhaps people find satisfaction in expressing their interests for the things that they feel possess a lack of interest or awareness by their peers.

The people that consider Purple Rain and 1999 underrated don't know what underrated means.

Which is kind of my point, actually. Because it is always going to turn into a thread about this vs that. I don't get the interest in making threads about it.

it kind of surprises me that you, of all people, would make a thread like this. =\ youre complaining about pointless threads, but theres no more of a point to this thread than any of those D:

Not sure about that. There's definitely an aspect of social behaviour that is to rebel, or reject something because it's popular, but I think the more overriding instinct is to 'follow the trend'.

The music industry thrives on this fact - even an attempt to circumvent this with an "Alternative" genre backfired, because suddenly the popular thing to do was to like alternative music.

I'd say most people either consciously or subconsciously seek to be validated by finding others that agree with their opinions. Imagine never finding another person that liked a song you liked? You may well not care. Lots of people would.

That said, I suspect the people that start the "underrated" style threads are more of the rebellious variety, or, as Pickles said, just trying to establish a bit of purple cred or some such by going against what they perceive to be the popular opinion.

As for just posting an album or song name and looking for some discussion around it, I'm all for it. There are much worse threads to worry about (not suggesting that you are).

So much of his material is underrated, its impossible to pin down one song, you could make an albums worth at least of what you feel are under rated Prince songs (And albums!). And like you said (Spinlight) everyone would have a different opinion because its so subjective. But debate is the food of thought. A song I will go with is "In Love" off For You, everyone else is always going on about other tracks off the album (There's a thread on I'm Yours at the moment). But no body mentions this song and its an underappreciated nugget, a neat little piece of cute bouncy pop with some naughty lyrics added in. Its clever, very listenable, and really to most people the first actual full Prince song they heard when they first got the For You album (Unless of course they played "The Other Side" first and got Baby, also another under rated track) as the 90 seconds of For You's acapellacrooning with handclapzandfingasnapz does not really count as a full song.

The melody of In Love the falsetto and the hilarious line "I really wanna play in your river" make it an infectious imprint on my mind.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

The only real usefulness is if you haven't heard something for a while and one of these threads triggers a "oh yeah, that one" response, then you go play it. That's the most possible usefulness you could expect from one of those threads.

firstly .. rainbow children cant be underrated because it sucks

second .. a genius does not simply learn instruments and how to construct a typical pop song and then exercise that knowledge in the same way over and over for the next 20 years .. no a genius continually pushes beyond what he already knows and has done .. prince has been completely stagnent but more realistically .. he's done some real backsliding in the genius department. yes his genius has gone away due to his laziness and focus on money based musical motives instead of genuine expression and desire to make music that moves beyond the watered down comercial template that ignorant music purchasers tend to support.

why do people point out his "lost genius" in music that basically sucks .. for example, rainbow children .. because they love prince and know he was a genius once and desparately want to believe he is writing from that same place of genuinity .. they dont want to believe that prince has completely sold his soul and taken his gift and squandered it for a paycheck so he can by himself a higher class of whore for his latest arm candy .. they dont want to believe that they love someone so shallow .. that someone so inspiring turned into someone so pathetic .. going from a prince whos music touches every generation and every taste and lasts for 1000 listens .. to a prince whos music you ranks up there with every other pathetic passing phase of crappy pop music that you outgrow after the age of 10 .. ala milli vanilli or new kids on the block

lets just all wake up and smell the coffee burning here .. the man isn't even trying anymore

thats a little harsh. Prince kept trying new things from 1980-95. With Dirty Mind he created his own sound and released one of the most daring and controversial albums ever, legitimised th use of drum machines with 1999, created a song like "When doves cry", a no 1 dance hit without a bassline and a song that sounds unlike anything i've ever heard, released the experimental parade, masterpieces like sign and purple rain. Love symbol itself is a very creative record and endorphinmachine rocked harded than anything i've ever heard from him.

Expecting one man to try new things forever is unrealistic. He did it for 15 years, period. Even in recent years he's written some good stuff. Are you seriously telling me that you dont like atleast 5 prince songs from the past five years?

there really is nothing that i would put on proudly and say to a friend .. you absolutely have to check this out, this is prince, the one and only, if u dont love this yer fucking nuts .. on the contrary .. there is plenty pre 'artist' music that i could easily do that with, now i can handle a bum album or song here and there but almost 2 decades of never ending lackluster music from this guy leaves me scratching my head how that is even possible and i know he could do better if he gave a flying fuck

as far as expectations go .. prince can't expect music fans to support them if they don't put out top notch music .. since when is it ok to be mediocre in the music world .. what has american idol done to you people .. what have ur dumb ass ringtones and cell phones and listening to music on those crappy ipod headphones done to you people .. prince needs to add a bit more squirrel grease if he is gonna kick my ass ..

we'll just hav to agree to disagree then. There are hardly any musicians who had a 15 year creative span. Most end up running out of ideas at some point and prince is no exception. I like about 20 or so songs that Prince has released over the past 7 years and a few of them which i absolutely love- Musicology, Black Sweat, Love and Sticky Like Glue. To each to their own, i guess.

Most of Prince's independently released songs are released by the org. elite lol but a few gems that stand out in this category, 2 me, are:

- dreamer

- here

- lion of judah

- thunder

- sacrifice of victor

cool
