Thoughts on "Love Sign" Only recently discovered this one and I know it's offically credited to Nona Gaye, but it's a Prince song with her guest vocals, really. I love this track. Would've loved to heard more like it (although the albums that came after, "Come" and "The Gold Experience", are much better). What do most orgers think about it?

S'okay. I remember at the time it seemed like a sure fire smash hit if they had promoted it what with a slick video and relatively catchy chorus - Like a lot of the swing/R&B material it was aping from the time, it sounds kinda flat these days to my ears, but still with a good, hooky chorus.

nice catchy song, good video, their voices complement each other really well, should have been a bigger hit than it was

did you hear the Shock G's Silky Smooth Remix?

Still love it. My friends and me used to go to Erotic City at Glam Slam in Minneapolis, which was an after hours 18+ party in the upper room of the club. Anyway, he came and debuted the video and song one night and everyone was super excited about it. He kept walking back and forth across the dance floor with a Tootsie Pop in his mouth, looking excactly like he did in the video, one time walking right in between me and this girl I was dancing with. Such a cool place to be for an 18 yr old Prince fan. PS - I wonder why he chose Ice Cube to direct?

Another one of those overlooked Prince gems that dissproves the theory from the uninformed that Prince music in the 90s was anything less than the Prince music in the 80s.

I loved it at the time, probably because I was really into the whole "Free Prince" bullshit and whatnot. Now I look at it for what it was: an extension of Prince's psuedo "gangsta" wanna-be cool phase that started with The Game Boyz, continued with that ridiculous gun microphone and ended when Mayte screwed him too hard and he forgot to pull out.

I can never decide whether I prefer the original or Shock's mix. Prince was impressed enough to include Shock's mix on "Crystal Ball". I love both!
Fun fact - the music video for "Love Sign" was directed by none other than Ice Cube. I wonder if him and Prince are still friends?
EDIT - oops, sorry piepie, didn't see that you'd already mentioned Cube I wonder why, too! I wonder if he's directed any more music videos since then. [Edited 3/22/11 11:40am] |

Prince never has to "attempt" to be cool. He always cool. |

Good song, great video too. I like the remix more however. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I actually like that better than the original.
I agree with NoveauDance in that it does sound a little flat but I still like it. Very 90's.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Back when it came out it was as cool as can be, Now it souds outdated I thought the crystal ball remix was mo better
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I've always enjoyed it. However, I think the other contemporary r&b/ rap / new jack swing influenced songs from this era are better ("Letitgo", "Acknowledge Me" and even "18 & Over" for the sheer fun factor).
I remember seeing the video on MTV.

really liked it at the time. it's still alright. nice bonus track. I prefer the Shock G remix on Crystal Ball these days.

Thoughts on "Love Sign"? Somewhat naive, but still a good groove. I used to prefer the original, but lately the Shock G remix is where it's at Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

If LoveSign was overlooked it's only because Prince was beefing with his label and didn't promote it well on his own. Lovesign was a pretty good song, but 90's Prince music was mostly embarrassingly bad.

"Mostly"?
So at least over 50% of his 90s output was "embarrassingly bad"?
I hope you don't expect everyone to agree with you.

You're welcome and yes it is Ice Cube [Edited 3/23/11 9:59am]

Upon thinking about it, Prince probably used Ice Cube in an attempt to ultimately have his anti-gang message reach gang culture. At the time, Cube was more associated with gangsta rap and "Boyz N The Hood" than anything else. That's my guess.
