How do you think Prince's sexuality has played into his career?

I'm writing an article about how fans and nonfans experience Prince and his sexuality so I figured that I'd ask you guys, especially the older fans who remember Prince's earlier career. Personally I feel that the way that Prince expresses his sexuality through his music is freeing. He encompasses all sides of sexuality and even sings about the spiritual side of sex which isn't often done. However, being young I don't know how fans recieved Prince when he first came out and was singing in thigh-hi's, thongs, lace and eyeliner. I've read about the negative media reactions and I know about Tipper Gore's crusade against 'Darling Nikki' but I would like to know about the positive responses. So, how do you think that Prince's sexuality has played into his career? wink

Well, when I first realized I was gay I was trying to be rebellious against 'gender lines' and all of the expectations for males and females so at the time I was really getting into flamboyant men like David Bowie and later Prince... So his sexuality definitely appealed to me, it was like gay heterosexuality
Personally . I think we are all Boring with No Lives cause all we do is talk about Prince,Criticize and Gossip. I need a Horny Man is what I Need and probably so do most of yas. We are Sexually Frustrated what we R... Amen..!!! - zelaire

Sex has played (and continue to play) a huge part in Prince's work. Sex is something that everyone can relate to and everyone is interested in. For the most part. Prince says stuff no one says about sex. He is honest and coy at the same time.

I totally agree with that. I think that Prince stays away from polarizing sex and shows himself as being vunerable and dominant.

Some people are more sexual than others, with him, I think it's comes naturally. With that he has brought his music and the lyrics touch every drop of human emotion there is.

Because of his sexualtiy, he has questioned many things. Likewise with his spirituality. He has given us a complete menu of music. Here on the org. some are drawn to different songs, some connect with many of the same songs, and some seem to like different periods of his music. Some like it all. He is truly an artist. rose
