Upon thinking about it, Prince probably used Ice Cube in an attempt to ultimately have his anti-gang message reach gang culture. At the time, Cube was more associated with gangsta rap and "Boyz N The Hood" than anything else. That's my guess.

I think not lol Any man that would use "I Wanna Be Your Lover" as a opening for one of his movies is definitely a Prince fan lol and not just using it as a front lol

I'm not denying he was a Prince fan. I'm talking about Prince specifically selecting Cube to direct a video with that specific message, especially when he wasn't even a director. I feel like it wasn't an accident or just a whimsical decision.

My understanding is that Prince wanted to release this as a single but it was blocked by Warners. Shame, it would have been a huge hit.

He was under contract to them, and didn't want to put it out on WB, so it wasn't like they were being huge dicks about it, they let him do MBGITW.

He directed a Color Me Badd video around that time too. I think it was for the song "Time and Chance".

I don't think Ice-Cube did get paid.

The video is very badly edited. Jumps all over the place, like an a.d.d. hangover.

Notice Prince gets out of bed with his hair all perfect..lol

This was his second creative period. The songs just kept coming. That beef with Warners was very helpful--for us!

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

I appreciate this, but considering that there were US and EU promos of the single as well as considerable primetime UK Radio 1 airplay of the track, it's definitely a hit that never was and would have given Prince much commerical impetus re his career.

Well he should've put it on Come then he could've done just that (Who am I kidding, like Prince would've promoted it any way then!)

If LoveSign was overlooked it's only because Prince was beefing with his label and didn't promote it well on his own. Lovesign was a pretty good song, but 90's Prince music was mostly embarrassingly bad.

"Mostly"?

So at least over 50% of his 90s output was "embarrassingly bad"?

I hope you don't expect everyone to agree with you.

Oh yeah. I mean that. Graffiti Bridge, prince, Come, Gold Experience, Emancipation are all terrible albums. I don't listen to them. I have no idea who does. Only the really super Prince FAMS can get into 90's Prince.

Only recently discovered this one and I know it's offically credited to Nona Gaye, but it's a Prince song with her guest vocals, really. I love this track. Would've loved to heard more like it (although the albums that came after, "Come" and "The Gold Experience", are much better). What do most orgers think about it?

Actually the material on Come and TGE were done before Lovesign, released later, but recorded before.

Still love it. My friends and me used to go to Erotic City at Glam Slam in Minneapolis, which was an after hours 18+ party in the upper room of the club. Anyway, he came and debuted the video and song one night and everyone was super excited about it. He kept walking back and forth across the dance floor with a Tootsie Pop in his mouth, looking excactly like he did in the video, one time walking right in between me and this girl I was dancing with. Such a cool place to be for an 18 yr old Prince fan. PS - I wonder why he chose Ice Cube to direct?

I think it was something as simple as Ice Cube using that line "I bought a house next to Prince" on one of this tracks which Prince later sampled. Sort of a weird 6 degree connection which didn't last very long but produced a slick and cool video. I also remember reading that Prince wanted to do with 'Love Sign' the same thing he did with 'TMBGITW' and release it through Bellmark as a single but Warners was dead against it. They didn't want him scoring another hit that wasn't on their label.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Another one of those overlooked Prince gems that dissproves the theory from the uninformed that Prince music in the 90s was anything less than the Prince music in the 80s.

Actually "Lovesign" was on its way 2 become a hit. But Warners seized Prince of releasing it as a single. Because of the mega success of "TMBGITW".So it was scrapped. But 2 me it was a hit anyway. It got major airplay on radio & the BET network. Luckily we got a good video from Ice Cube out of it. In exchange Ice Cube gave Prince a favor 4 "given" him Robin Power in his video "Its a Good day".

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince
