Dolphin

Hi there,

Back in 1994, with all the confussion surrounding what later would become the albums Come and Gold Experience, I remember having heard in the radio a version of Dolphin a bit different from the one in Gold Experience. Frankly, I'm not quite sure, it's been a long time, but I remember it being less overdone, simpler and without the, at least in my opinion, horrible fade-out of the album version.

I might be wrong, but I'd like to know if there's any other version of Dolphin out there, whether in an official album or in a bootleg. I recently heard the one in the 3-CD The Dawn, but to my disappointment it's the one in the album.

Thanks!

Could you be talking about the one on The Undertaker?

I've thought that it could be the one in The Undertaker, but isn't it a live version? As far as I remember, the one I listened to was a studio version, although I'm not completely sure about it.

The Undertaker is an album recorded in the Studio - it was just recorded by a live band, "the power trio".

There is a live version in circulation that party became the album version, but the only studio versions that the world ever heard are those two - the GE and the Undertaker versions.

Thanks a lot!

And just one more question: Who has published the CD of the studio version? Is it very difficult to find?

The main studio version is on The Gold Experience album, which is currently out of print, but you should be able to find copies on Amazon, eBay etc for a reasonable price. (Warners, 1995 by the way).

The Undertaker album was promo only, so not commercially available - promo copies go for about £150-£250? There is a laserdisc/VHS release, which is long out of print.

there's also the "glam slam ulysses" version which starts out with a minute of the "undertaker"

version as an intro.

the rest of the song follows the same basic structure of "The gold Experience" version but it's

slightly more gritty. the guitar sounds way more 'dirty' and unpolished. it's subtle but you can

hear it most notably during the solo which almost seems to be in a lower key and has a few

more 'rough edges'. but i can't make out a whole lot more in regards to subtle nuances since

the audio of the ulysses that i have is just a tad above horrible.

when was "ulysses" staged? 1993? or very early 1994? so it's probably a rougher mix, just as

most of the other songs on "Gold" ended up being a bit over polished by the time of release,

with their earlier versions having a bit more edge (endorphinmachine, anyone?)

i hadn't really taken notice of it before since i'm always listening to the version on "Gold", but

i quite like the "Ulysses" version now. i wish i could hear it in very good quality because this

is one of my fav prince songs of all time and to have it in even a very slightly different mix is

something i'd be very happy with.

I know it was a long time ago, (for some), but there was the version that he performed on David Letterman's show. It dropped the second verse and slightly extended the solo.
