First song featuring drum machine Prince started using linn drum full time on 1999 album. But he used it on earlier albums. On Controversy album also. Did he use it on Dirty Mind or on the first album by the Time. So what is the first Prince song with a drum machine?
one more bonus question
Prince started using Linn drum in a live setting on the 1999 tour. Was it hard in those days to make that thing sound right live and what was Bobby Z playing? Was some kind of acoustic drum present ? Did the drum setup changed between 1999 tour and Purple Rain tour?

Its impossible to know the first song featuring it considering he's recorded so much. As far as albums... I would say he first picked them up in 1981. There is no drum machine on albums prior to Controversy.
Edit:
Also, for your other question - Yes, Bobby had a drum machine and a live drum set up. [Edited 3/15/11 22:11pm]

Private Joy was the first. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Actually, Annie Christian was recorded prior to Private Joy being recorded.
As I said, its impossible to know what was his first drum machine track.

IIRC, Private Joy was the first time he used the Linn - not drum machines overall (dunno the stats on that - eggheads assemble!)

In fact, the first time Prince used a drum machine was in 1977 when Owen Husney bought him one and he wrote the unreleased 'Neurotic Lover's Baby's Bedroom' with that new gear.
As far as using the Linn itself I seem to remember the first one was 'Private Joy'.

I thought the unreleased song "Lisa" was?
I remember seeing that information around here before.

I can't tell what kind of drum machine is on that track. But it was recorded even earlier than the other 2 in this thread (Annie Christian, Private Joy).
Where did Private Joy come up anyway? Sexuality was recorded in Spring-Summer 1981 and it clearly has drum machines on it too. Would this not be a Linn? The Linn was released in early 1980. Would P not have had one by then? Would not many songs be recorded with a Linn even if it didn't sound like the typical set up?

He actually tested around with Dum Machines in the 70's on the numerous instrumentals on bootlegs ..then did not use them again until Controversy album. Lisa may have been the first though however. Where is that webiste with the recorded date informaton??

This is where I have based my information:
“My original drum machine, the Linn, had only one type of kick (drum). I think I had THE first Linn. I did PRIVATE JOY with a prototype of that Linn. Prince, Musician Magazine (4/97)
"Private Joy" was his first attempt at using it. I thought it came out pretty well. Bobby Z.
much of this is from an early draft of the 'PRINCE: THE STUDIO SESSIONS' book and UPTOWN magazine and UPTOWN's books.

working on it. I have so many interviews to transcribe and information to form, but it is still being created. Thanx for the props and for letting me know there is a market for it. The 1979 take of "Wouldn't You Love To Love Me?" uses a drum machine.

True, in fact, a lot of the old demos used basic snyth drum machines, but I think the thread refers to studio releases, and in particular, the introduction of the linn. .
