I think the GoldNigga cd does justice to Tony and that's mainly it.

I can't believe people are going out of their way to defend Tony M.

He brought a good funky vibe 2 those tracks it wouldn't have been the same without him. Prince & Tony meshed well 2gether in the studio and the stage they were a good match... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

Org are such haters on here. Tony M was the epitome of cool. Gators + Rat Tail + Stache + Glasses = COOL That's why Tony M was kept around for 3 years. Prince knew he was a cool brother. Prince would look at most of the org and say "MMM I aint feeling this. Security it's time for someone to leave! LAWD :::in Morris Day Voice::

He brought a more urban experience 2 Prince's vibe. A lot on this site don't like when Prince embraces his Urban side. It really bothers them. That is why they don't like Shelby J. or even Tamar. They prefer Wendy & Lisa after over 20 years of them gone. I'm glad Prince gives the finger and does what he wants... [Edited 3/17/11 20:22pm] will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! Spinlight said: I can't believe people are going out of their way to defend Tony M. Why? People are "going out of their way" to put him down and go on personal attacks. What's so wrong with people that have met him or don't have this hatred for him defending him?

He did bring a more black "experience" to Prince's band. That's the truth. But Tony is not the epitome of cool, Morris Day is.

I never particularly thought he was awful as a rapper, but when he came on, somehow it no longer sounded like a Prince song.
Even now I find it distracting somehow. My Legacy

He might have brought a particular "black experience" that Prince hadn't previously explored in his music (albeit not an especially good version of said "experience").
I don't see how what he brought was a "more black experience".
I'm not even sure how one would measure such a thing.

This is a load of BS. Think about the work he was releasing with The Time, Madhouse, Vanity. Consider the songs: Adore, Kiss, Irresistble Bitch, 17 Days, Mountains, shoot the entire 1999 Era stuff. All of that was when W&L were around. And what did we get with Tony M and the bungieboys? Diamonds & Pearls, Strollin, And God Created Women and 3 Chains O Gold. It's not all straight up R&B bub.
In the end, it was all the direction Prince wanted to go in so lets chill with the race wars. Mm-kay! Space for sale...

Tony M + the original NPG was what Prince needed in the early-90s. Prince dismissed Tony at the right time, though: he would have sounded out of place in Come/TGE, but he soars in LoveSymbol...

I always thought that Tony was a side of Prince that was pandering to what he felt was popular at the time. But it makes sense because the whole Diamonds & Pearls album feels like pandering after Graffiti Bridge
But commercially, I totally agree, it was just what he needed, and I like both D&P and despite having just said it was pandering.
But part of me will always be somewhat disappointed in that direction. It felt like a step back artistically, if it was a step forward commercially. My Legacy

Me too. Especially Gett Off. It's one of Prince's best party songs, and Tony was part of that great vibe. I also love the 'rap solo' on Live 4 Love, one of my all time favorite songs. Tony M wasn't great, but he did his job. If it wasn't him, Prince would've had someone else do that part and we'd be talking about him/her right now instead. The tracks "Push", "My Name is...", "Jughead" weren't that great to begin with. With or without Tony or any rapper, these songs only go so far in my book. The one song I wish Prince would re-record without any rapping or "see the booty boom" is "2 the 9's". It's virtually perfect without the segue way.
