When Prince Spoke

Hey guys. I have a random question that's been on my mind for sometime.

What was it like the first time you heard Prince speak. When was this and what did you think? Did it make you love him more? I'd like to ask that you not include movie roles. It's up to you though. If that's the first time you've heard him. But, perhaps you first heard his speaking voice during an interview of some sort? How'd that make you feel?

.......Oh-oh-oh, by the way...He plays guitar.

The first time I can remember hearing Prince speak was during the 1995 American Music Awards. I was very little, but my immediate reaction was: "Wow, he's got a really deep voice." Considering his size compared to everyone else on the show, I was totally shocked, lol.

I was surprised how soft-spoken, soothing, gentle, hesitant, vulnerable and monotone his voice was while speaking during interviews. Such a contrast to his natural, free, bold, resonant, melodic voice with quite a range when he's in his element singing his music. You'd never believe he could scream like that in his songs if you just went by his speaking voice. Well he is a Gemini after all, and probably feels most comfortable expressing himself vocally in his music.

Both his high voice and low voice is soothing and romantic mushy

When I first heard him speak, it was in an interview and I was like eek

That was when the only songs I knew of his was "kiss" and "raspberry beret"

The first time I heard Prince speak was when he accepted an award at the Minnesota Music Awards in 1986 I was like 'whoa, what a gentle shy voice! From someone who can really throw his voice out there in his songs!!!

Us Gemini's usually do express ourselves thru music or any one of the other arts, I'm quite shy & quiet, do not speak well publicly & absolutely hate being the centre of attention, almost a loner, however when im in the zone with my Drums I could play all day in front of anybody, funny how it works!!!

Honestly, I remember being a little cooked the first time I heard him speak. He spoke so softly I couldn't quite catch what he was saying. I think it was when he won his Oscar for Purple Rain or some other acceptance speech.

When he speaks in his songs....Lord help me.

The first time I heard him speak was "American Bandstand" but I didn't remember anything about his speaking voice because I was too busy staring at him trying to figure out just what the hell he was. lol

He sang completely in falsetto until the "Controversy" album so the first time I heard his speaking voice or even his singing voice that wasn't a falsetto, it sounded kinda scary. I remember one of the writers in the "Right On" magazine that year describing hearing his non-falsetto voice for the first time as "making the hairs on the back of his neck stand up", which was kinda the way it made me feel too at the time.

Agreed. That 2004 interview with Matt Lauer was great! love His voice was so deep and sexy. love2 Its one of those interviews where you "hang on his every word" because his voice and what he is saying is so captivating!!! I could listen to him talk all night about any and everything. That voice..hmmmm! fallinluv

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

The first time I recall hearing him speak was at the Grammy's in 1985. I remember he appeared scared and unsure of what to say. I remember my dad saying that Prince was "all doped up" because of the way he was acting and his eyes were glossy. Of course I tried to defend Prince but my dad wasn't having it. I was 14.

I was shocked that his voice was so deep. Then again, I thought he and MJ were brothers so their voices had to be the same. I only found out they weren't related like 4 years ago boxed

I couldn't believe his voice was so deep. When the initial shock wore off, I was thinking "Damn...makes him even more sexier..."

First concert: January 18, 2011 & then February 7, 2011 at MSG. Best concerts of my life.

First time I heard him speak was before I was a fan of Prince & I indulged in 'I Hate U' for the first time (My mothers friend let me borrow 'The Gold Experience' as I was Prince curious) .. Let's just say, I've never been the same since in many ways lol

His voice .. it does things to me, honestly. I've never heard a spoken voice that has captivated me to the extent Prince's has. I could listen to the man speak all day.

The first time I heard him speak was when he said, "Dearly beloved.."

Then again in the Beautiful 1s. "Paint a perfect picture...bring to life the vision in one's mind"

Both times, I was impressed. Definitely wanted to jump onto the boat in Lets go crazy.

And his words in the beautiful 1s were pretty deep.

BPI Awards 1985, I think I was quite excited at his being on UK tv (but not as excited as my sister), I distinctly remember my dad bursting out laughing and shouting "what a little wanker!"

Looking back, i think it was the just the way Prince was dressed, what he said, and the fact that he had big chick walk him to the side of the stage to collect his reward.

My dad was very much from the ......erm, "old school."

Saying that. My dad was utterly amazed at Prince during the televised Lovesexy gig in '88, he respected Prince as a musician after watching that.

Apparently Virgo's are that way, too.

I'm the most shy person in the world, but, as you can tell by my username, when I get in my zone, there's no stopping me.

I like using music to express my thoughts and feelings. Because God only knows that I hate talking about them.

Loner. For real.

But anyway, to answer the post...

The first time I heard Prince speak was an interview in and around 1999. I don't quite remember who the interviewer was or what the subject matter was, but I was AMAZED at how soft-spoken he was, even then.
