If I Was Your Girlfriend :: Is there a better version than the Oprah special?

The topic of the thread says it all.

Rarely do I post on these boards, as I greatly prefer to lurk, but this time I need help. razz

I am absolutely in LOVE with the version of IIWYGF that Prince performed on her show. It's funkier than the original and the bass guitar just kicks so much ass.

Is there any other live boot floating around that tops this?

Falling leaves will appear to them.. Like slow-motion rain..

Yeah, the upbeat, funky way he was doing it on Oprah and the Emancipation Day concert is cool. I really like the 'darker', more introverted feel of the SOTT-era version, though. There's a nice live version of it that's very easy to find, credited to Miles Davis and Prince, on account of the fact that it comes, I think, from the 1987 concert at Paisley which Miles guested at (even though he's not on this song). That's my favourite version that I've heard. biggrin

In a weird way, it's like IIWYG was enhanced with several elements of its soul roots, but then all of that was run through a sampling of the Shhhh vibe, if that makes any sense. Actually, the song is on Budokan CD 2 and CD 3 (two different nights), and both are great, but the sound is better on CD 2. Anyway, both of the Budokan versions give a little more prominence to the drums, which really brings out the groove. I wanna dance to it. The lead line is slightly sped up, too. And his voice is pitch perfect on it. It always blows me away.

I haven't listened to the Oprah version in ages, so it might be better. Since they're from close to the same time, they might even be pretty much to the same. I'll have to give it another listen.

It surely is recorded on a soundstage in PP and the exact same arrangement of the song was performed the entire tour.

I have to admit, I rather enjoy the Oprah version as well. It's the version that made me LOVE that song. I've come to appreciate the SOTT movie version as well, but the Oprah version rules!

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Personally love the SOTT movie version and the "Oprah" version equally. I really wish that version was released. Anywhoo I converted the audio from that performance into an mp3 file for my ipod..for both actually so it's all good.
