Yes, but Prince can name all 8,000 presidents who came before George Washington, so he must know what he's talking about, no? You're a real fucker. Prince also refers to his songs as "his children." But his "fams" then buy his children. That is not good. That fans ran away with the "fam" concept, well I doubt he expected that. I'm sure it was originally with good intention. People though are just unpreditable. If we buy his children, does that mean he sold them into slavery?... Prince is the massa?

It was a joke. I saw Prince say that several times in interviews and you could clearly see that he was not too serious about that, every single time. He wanted to say that him and Larry trust each other and work together on a more free and loose basis and that they simply didn't need a contract. I'm quite sure Prince knows that the word derives from latin and has nothing to do with the English verb "to con".

You're very charitable in the face of evidence to the contrary. He's dead serious about all the other stupid shit he says.
Yeah, he was using it as a joke, but only kind of. And only sometimes. He did actually believe it and was using it to illustrate his point. It was his number one topic of conversation at the time. I was witnessing it, as an adult, as it was happening. There is no reason to believe that Prince knows the meaning of the word derived from the original Latin. And even if it was pointed out to him, he was still saying it.

His websites also posted the CON statements, etc.

SagsWay2low said: Prince gave a televised interview with Chris Rock with regards to his Emancipation "Come Back". Remember, the one where he's wearing that fuzzy crush velvet lime green jumper of an outfit but trying to wax "street vernacular" in his versace shades---sort of like Tupac meets Bobby Trendy. Prince said, that none of his albums were do or die albums, and that he had plenty of fans who would support him. He then quickly stepped back and said, "I call then Fams, short for family" and continued that "fans" is "short for fanatical".
This was during a period of time when Prince was playing games with words even moreso than his normal levels. Remember "CON-tracts" and all of that silliness? Nevermind that half of the things were related to JW, a Christian sect, based on a bloodlust religion of the Mesopotamia river valley that wasn't even written in English, making those silly word games pointless anyways.
But, I digress, it came from that Interview.
He was stating that his fans were family. But I challenge any of you new power buttpuppets to email Prince and see if you can drop in for Thanksgiving dinner sometime. You know, sit down, have a few laughs, sit, eat, pray, and discuss matters of the heart together....cause you're family and all.
Shit, I'd challenge any of you motherfuckers to even ask him for an autograph.
Fams indeed. Crazy, stupid motherfuckers. IIRC, "Emancipation" was released in '96. A few years and albums away from him becoming a JW. But err'thang else you said, yeah.

he hooked up with Larry on the JOTY tour. the seeds were planted in 1997. by 1998, it was already being discussed when he took out the swearing on the NPS tour, even though he was still playing things like Face Down and the like. [Edited 3/13/11 12:48pm]

My own pure conjecture, speculation and guestamate has been that around the 90's Prince got in over his head, whether from drugs or mental illness. Everything started to fall apart, his work, his relationships etc. and he turned to Larry and organized religion to help him through.
I only say this because I have seen this a million times. Standard human coping mechanisms. And even his outward appearance and ramblings at the time fit that bill to a tee. And if that was the case, then Larry and the JW's saved his life and career. Most people that turn to organized religion in this way become fam-atical about it.
I will now put my pipe down and float upstream.

[Edited 3/13/11 12:48pm] Right. Not Emancipation. He started "evolving" shortly thereafter to be sure though. When exactly did he convert? 2000?
