For 2.99 it doesn't really matter. It's good. Some people just think it's ok. It's better than 2010 (for me.) 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale is a 1999 compilation album of various Prince outtakes recorded from 1985 through 1994. It was released by Warner Bros. Records without his co-operation and at the same time as his Arista album release the same year, Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic. Fans often complain that the songs have been over-worked and watered-down from the original versions that can be heard on various bootlegs, particularly "Old Friends 4 Sale". No singles were released in the US or UK to support the album, however "Extraordinary" was occasionally performed during his One Nite Alone...Tour. It's not a "pop" cd. It's just a compilation of quirky songs. So not a traditional CD release. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

I love it, but have to say that what I call the "Avalanche vocal Version," of "Old Friends 4 Sale," brings it down just a bit. If he had included the 1985 version, I probably would have simply passed out from happiness. Typical after 1989 Prince over-production on that track. Kind of like when you hear Endorphinmachine's original mix before the album came out, and then the Gold Experience comes out, and you have the over glossy production, and have that damn keyboard part up in the mix. I think the best example of this, is "Joy In Repetition." On the bootleg, the track has perhaps his best use of the Linn Drum programming to start the track in true "haunting" fashion. But the day Graffiti Bridge came out, to my shock, and horror, he just could not resist putting the damb segue from I Know to Alphabet St between We Can Funk(also re-recorded) and Repetition.
Of course, Bridge was the first album where he totally embraced over-production, and trying to "fix" songs that were not close to being broken. Bridge and Gold were the two albums where he totally overkilled this process. "We Can Funk," for one, and "Billy Jack Bitch," sounded great the way it was in either of its two mixes, but Prince could not live with himself if the great Horn breakdown was not interrupted with the stupid NPG Operator yelling out "Please access another experience." I remember shouting back at the bitch saying...."I'd like to actually hear this song without your dumb ass talking." Anyone who has read my posts will know that I almost come to tears when she starts telling me at the end of Gold that I am actually an official member of the New Power Generation. The only part missing is that I was shocked she didn't announce that my NPG Lunchbox, Membership Card, and Lunchbox stickers were on their way in the mail....Cheeseball lame.
I'm not saying that Prince should only release demo versions. He should know when the original mix is better.
For example, the original "The Dance," is sparse, and a little bit lame, but the final version is like the great stepchild of "The Beautiful Ones." [Edited 3/15/11 1:06am]

This could not only be close to being my favourite Prince CDs, but one of my all time favourite CDs fullstop!
It is very atmospheric and in the right environment, you can get totally lost in it.
So, yes I would suggest 2.99 is a reasonable investment
