Covers of unreleased songs

Something I was thinking about since that "Extra Loveable" cover popped up.

Sometime last year, there was a similar instance posted where a band had covered the Dirty Mind out-take "Lisa".

Are the any more covers of unreleased songs? If it's indeed the case that somebody covering an unreleased track pushed Prince into releasing it (or at the very least acknowledging it), maybe I should do my own take on "Wonderful Ass"..... LOL!! lol lol lol

I would not be surprised if somebody somewhere had done a cover of "Electric Intercourse".

Welcome 2 the Ratrace is still on itunes last time I looked

That was out before a Large Room With no Light was released for Montreux if I remember correctly

ive "covered" a handful of em. they will never be played for anyone else.

I also manipulated the sound by dumping it back and forth between cassettes to give it that old grimey bootleg feel too.

Not technically as cover as Prince gave it to them

That's not the same thing. They were signed to Paisley Park and Prince gave them the song.

If I understand the law correctly,

Any song that has been released can be covered as long as the proper royalties are paid to the rights holders.

If a song has not been officially released it cannot be covered, without explicit permission from the rights holder.

Well, any one could cover it, they just couldn't release it without permission...

That said,

I must not understand the law correctly,

Because, if I am right, how on earth did Prince stop the Shockadelica 50th Anniversary Tribute from being released?

As long as they pay the royalties he should not have been able to stop it...

Any music lawyers on the forum know the facts?

"In A Large Room With No Light" and "Welcome 2 The Rat Race" are the same song. The song originally circulated as "Welcome 2 The Rat Race" before the real title became known. That was probably because it's hard to tell what the exact title of the song is from the lyrics alone and the chorus concludes with the line "Welcome 2 The Rat Race" that is emphasized more than any other line during the chorus ("Moonbeam Levels" also circulated first as "A Better Place To Die").

Didn't Prince once say that covers of unreleased songs would get a definitive "no"? Or maybe it was one of his representatives that made the comment? There seems to be very easy workarounds to get a "permission" to record a cover version of songs - the artists themselves don't even necessarily get informed of it - but recording a cover version of an unreleased song is probably a different deal.

Same song, different titles. In A Large Room With No Light is the actual title.

The songs are not even in the Ascap record files.

but Prince would have to approved Will Key's cover of "Large Room With No Light"? As I understand it the compulsory license only applies to songs that have been published.

Thank you for the info!

Could have sworn I read that it was pulled due to Prince's wishes...

Glad I was wrong!

He tried to pull it but had no legal foundation.

Illuminations

I've been listening to a lot of the outtakes and unreleased songs lately, and I can only think of a couple that anyone would even consider covering. Most of the boots and outtakes, etc. really, really aren't as good as most fans say... too long and too much of the same thing. There are great stand outs, however.

Plus Prince never released it, so it's not even a cover.
