The meaning of "Sometimes It Snows In April"

I believe "Sometimes It Snows in April" is about the end of the Revolution- It was well known the ship was going down before Parade, trust. Can anyone expound on this topic seriously minus the drag queen bitchiness? Thank You! I think it was the last song back to back with Purple Rain at the last Revolution show that took place in Japan in September of '86. I think Prince really looked up to Sly Stone more than people realize too. Sly went solo and left the Family Stone- Prince left the Revolution. They both have massive similarities in their chronologies/timelines. I love Sly as well - to me they were the Revolution of the 60's. People say Sly went crazy. People say Prince went crazy. They are both massively unpredictable. These comparisons go on and on, but it's fascinating. We all know he dipped from James Brown and others as well, but damn he did the best job & was clearly the flossiest of them all- for me to this day...

I always had thought of it like this...

The album is titled, "Parade, music from the motion picture, Under The Cherry Moon".

When you see Christopher at the beginning of the film, you see him at the grotto writing in a notebook. when he gets up, he rips a page out of the notebook and lays it down, we can see thet it reads, "Goodness will guide us when love is inside us... until then, life is a Parade...

C.Tracy".

So, if life is a Parade, then the album is about life, Christopher's life.

Sometimes It Snows In April is at the end of both the film and album, Christopher "Tracy" of course dies at the end of both.

"Sometimes" when it snows in spring, "April", the snow can "Sometimes" kill the new life just starting to bloom.

Basiaclly, "Sometimes" things can die early or young, when it's just starting to bloom, like Christopher Tracy.

"I often dream of heaven and I know that Tracy's there...

Maybe he's found the answer 2 all the April snow..."

Maybe in heaven Christopher did find the answers to why he died so young.

I look at the song from the perspective of Prince singing about his character, C. Tracy.

.

i think the meaning is up 2 the listener...art is open to all kinds of interpretation.

my take (perhaps) is that even though April should usher in spring, sometimes it

can still snow...as in "anything can happen."

the tune must have been influenced by Prince's geographical location in the land

of snow

You take from it what you want - but remember the song was recorded before ATWIAD was even released - so the Revolution was still together as a unit - growing in fact, and Prince was recording a butt-fuck load of songs, and W&L still had a big input in future recordings, including the Dream Factory, which was fashioned to be even more of a band project than Parade was.

BTW, I don't see why this couldn't have been part of the existing ongoing SISIA thread - other than you didn't like other people's interpretation of the song.

You guys know where the title comes from right? It's from spring lambs that die early if it's a very long winter - I mean, Prince didn't come up with that - I thought it was a given that it's on the soundtrack because this is about CT's death in the context of the movie. confuse

Also, I don't think I've seen it before, but Jesus was the 'lamb of God', so it could just be another God-squad song with the name changed to suit the film.

This is a rude assumption that I'm even aware of the other thread you are speaking of- I was not aware of it at all- nor was I disagreeing with anyone elses interpretation of the song. As far as Around The World In A Day Goes, the band was FAR from growing at that time, I know this for a FACT - how you ask? You'll find out when the documentary comes out. What documentary you ask? Secrets are to be sold, not told. I'm done posting here. I thought this was going to be a place I could share thoughts with other people who appreciate Prince- What I found was a bunch of catty rude people who have a chip on their shoulder about who knows how much about Prince and who's right and wrong. I didn't join this board to have everything I say dismantled. Disappointing... WAY too negative here. Peace

that just when you think you are through a cold winter and heading into spring it can snow. That just when things are looking up they can take a turn for the worst.

It may be one of the lines that works better is some parts of the world than in others.

Sometimes it Snows in April....

Sometimes things throw a wrench into your good forture. Snow in April can definately ruin your Spring plans. But in the end, everything works out for the best anyway.

In the movie, CT had just found love and was giving up his old whorish ways, yet was killed.

The good die young, good things never last, etc. Another great statement of Prince's.

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

The trolls have won! They run all of Prince's cool fans off with their rabid-dog behavior. I'm sorry for this, MJ fans are very loving and welcoming and proud of their star. Wish Prince fans could be the same way... Don't let the miserable people run you off...that is exactly what they want! It's sad b/c that's not what Prince represents at all.

Good point.

And I suppose the original title is more poetic than your suggestion ,or something like" It can snow in April but it probably won't".

Out-take original lyrics:

"There are documented occasions when it has snowed during the month of April.

At the time, this is cause for mild amusement, but we soon forget about it throughout the course of the year."

I wish Prince fans were more like that... really love him and would join something like "The Purple Army" to prove their eternal fandom, as cheesy as it sounds. Of all the boards I know of this is the best one - for the exact reasons you describe.

Prince is a gifted musician who should feel proud of having intelligent people taking his music seriously enough to want to have opinions about it. Fandom in itself is like pissing in your pants, it might feel warm, but that feeling soon subsides.
