An album of nothing but protege tracks.

I've always wished P would just do a record of his own interpretations of his proteges' songs. When or in what style is up to you, so what would you have chosen?

For me, I would've liked him to go back at about 1993-ish and redone the following as an album:

1. Ice Cream Castles

2. Sex Shooter

3. Wouldn't U Love 2 Love Me?

4. 100 MPH

5. Get It Up

6. U

7. The Dance Electric

8. 777-9311

9. Mutiny

10. A Love Bizarre

I think the 1993-1994 sound was the closest he got to reliving that old school MPLS sound but merging it flawlessly with arena rock and pop sensabilities. These would not be complete re-recordings but they would use the old basic tracks and embellish them ala Graffiti Bridge as opposed to 1999: The New Master.

I was listening to Carmen Electra's album yesterday and I realized how much I really like the music on it. I hate Tony M's appearance on it, and Carmen's just horrible, but it made me realize how much I would like the album if I could just erase them at times. I'd love to hear a Prince-only version of this album.

Other choices would include I Love You (A Million Miles) and Some Kind of Lover.

And of course Noon Rendezvous would be awesome.

I would say some Time songs, but I don't think they'd be any different and just having Prince vocals on them is only a minor turn-on for me.

I thought the Carmen stuff was better than people gave it credit for. mad

I mean, I even liked her vocals.

I can deal with her vocals on about half the songs, actually. Listening to it all in one sitting wears thin, but individually the songs are pretty great.

I never realized how much "Fantasia Erotica" and J.Lo's "Waiting for Tonight" sound alike till yesterday.

Barring an uncensored Crystal Ball II type of release, I've always thought this would be a great idea as the next best thing.

These would be my picks:

A Million Miles (I Love You)

Noon Rendezvous

A Love Bizarrre (though it kinda-sorta counts as his too already, I guess)

Holly Rock

Love Thy Will Be Done

Open Book

For Love (the remix version)

Baby, You're a Trip

Standing At The Alter

Wouldn't You Love To Love me

Journey 2 The Center Of Your Heart

Eternity

High Fashion/Mutiny

Desire

The Screams of Passion

The Voice

House In Order

The Undertaker

Ain't No Place Like U

Johnny (full version of him, minus the stupid affect on the voice, no Tony M. and the "oh oh-oh oh oh-oh" chants varied a bit like when he'd do it live)

U

Redheaded Stepchild

pretty much any of the funkier tracks by the Time

This is too hard, Spin! mad

I like too much of the protege stuff. So much of it is great music that is talked-down just because of who's performing it or because of the back story of Prince getting into someone's panties.

I'd love to hear anything given to a protegèe sung by Prince.

Very especially comes to mind 'Violet Blue'.

I do not know who actually wrote it, other than the usual suspicions, but I think it is a heavily under-appreciated piece of music.

I tend to listen to it more than most other Prince related songs.

I can't believe I'm the only one who gave love to "Ice Cream Castles"!?!?! Like, that song sounds like it was lifted right off of ATWIAD!

True, true. I didn't listen to The Time's music until probably around the time they showed up at the Rave2000 show!

Yeah, I love the remix too. It has that extra guitar as well. I always thought he musta been fond of that track to feature himself so much in it, lol.

From my understanding & I believe an interview withJill Jones, she wrote/co wrote a lot of the album with Prince

Cool thread, Spin. I dig it.

However - are we limited to to songs that Prince wrote, or can we include songs that he may not have written 100%, but had an involvement in? Because, although it's rumored he did write the song (and I'm almost certain it's him on guitar), the official statement for Mazarati's "Strawberry Lover" is that Brown Mark did the music and Prince re-wrote the lyrics. But that's a song I'd LOVE to hear Prince's take on.

So here's a few that stand out to me, from the top of my head (I'm not at home so don't have my collection in front of me).

1. Strawberry Lover (Mazarati)

2. Mind Bells (Kahoru Kohiruimaki)

3. Red Headed Stepchild (Tamar)

4. Mia Bocca (Jill Jones)

5. The Screams Of Passion (The Family)

6. 777-9311 (The Time)

7. Sex Shooter (I'd like Prince's take to be based on the Vanity 6 demo rather than the official A6 release)

8. The Dance Electric (Andre Cymone)

9. Blue Limousine (Apollonia 6)

10. Chocolate (The Time)

11. Violet Blue (Jill Jones)

12. Boom Boom (Jill Jones)

13. I Guess It's All Over (Mazarati)

14. Shall We Dance? (Brown Mark)

15. Bang Bang (Brown Mark)

Good pick on the Tamar track - I almost picked "Sunday in the Park"!

And it would be great to hear "Screams of Passion" done by Prince. Word is that they recorded directly overtop his vocals when they did the St. Paul version. sigh

Ah, "Sunday In The Park" is great. I'm feeling to pull out the Tamar album now lol.

I hope that "Screams Of Passion" demo leaks someday! I wonder if Prince sang Paul and Susannah's parts in different registers so that he was effectively duetting with himself. That would be so cool to hear.

I'm PRETTY sure it doesn't exist anymore. When I say they recorded overtop, I mean they deleted Prince's vocal track by recording Paul's on top of it. Maybe now that those guys are around more and are more vocal, they could clear that up for us??

Ah, I see. I hope that's not the case. I assume F Deluxe will be doing some more livestream stuff when they put the album out, so that might be an opportunity to ask.
