Boy, am I in shock

As most of you guys may know I'm an art teacher, so today my class was talking about music and who they liked, and asked me who I liked, of course I said Prince, and I got the usual response, "that one symbol guy"? But as they were saying that one of my students said he was cool-very surprising and to top it off he started singing "7"( he is the class clown). Guess kids today do know what real music is, huh?

maybe there's some hope after all. a friend recently babysat a 9, 10, and 11 year-old. They all knew Michael Jackson, but hadn't heard of Prince. That shocked me.

I guess he hasn't had any real airplay in their lifetimes. Crazy!
let me come over it's a beautiful day to play with you in the dark

I work with kids a lot, but when I mention Prince (tho I rarely get the chance), they usually give me a blank stare, ask, "Prince of what?" or say something like, "Oh, gross." I'd love to have a moment like yours! lol

Younger people will not know who Prince is until they hit 30, and start to broaden their musical tastes.

I'd say it's a shame, but just think what the soundchecks or the celly would be like filled with kids! Urrrggghh. lol

Well, I'm glad that they didn't say "that gay guy?".
I can't stand that!

they're 8th graders and a lot more open minded about that kind of stuff-surprisingly again.

I have a 15 year old daughter who loves him. Of course I raised her right, with lots of censorship until she turned 12 or 13 but I find that she has gone back through all my stuff and actually knows most of the lyrics of the whole diry mind cd. Also she has several friends who she says like him and gave 1999 as xmas gifts to 3 of them. So there is hope for the future. She hates todays pop music and says that since she knows better she has no respect for an "artist" who doesn't write, sing and play.

Me 2.
This is exact response I get, or "who is that?" Not any of the kids I work with (6-13 year olds) know of Prince but know of MJ.
One of them said that they know of MJ simply because he's been in the news more with the baby throwing and plastic surgery that has been reported by the media...

I have a daughter who's 13, and she adores Prince, She knows the lyrics to almost all the released records. she has taught her friends to like Prince and then to compare the others to him. She is her Middle school President, and will argue with the best of them. She listens to all kinds of music, Rock, Alternative, Country, R&B, Rap. Gospel, etc.
I am so pleased that she is tone deaf and color blind, her friends are all races and nationalities. (I've done a great Job at raising her to be open minded and it seems that she is.
How you gonna get my back when you fronting.

One day while being nosy, my 5 year old niece opens a closet door to be surprised by a huge 1999 era poster of Prince. She closes the door really quickly as if she's scared. Then peaks in again and asks...'who is that lady?'

hehehe...now she loves him!

Michael has always been more popular than Prince.hell even my 3 year old nephew knew who MJ was when he saw his pic on a magazine.he's had zero exposure to him as far as i know.

he doesn't know who Prince is though.shrug

since prince isnt all over mtv at the moment, how the hell are kids supposed to know who he is? its hard enough to find a style of your own when crap like eminem & britney are on everyones tongue.. i know for sure that prince was not very popular in my school/town/whatever when i first got a hold of his cds.. everyone made fun of me for listening to him, when MJ was "it" ..my parents let me listen to his music because i wasnt old enough to understand the lyrics anyway (hmm) but my passion for him still lives, and its stronger than ever, i might add.. im only nineteen, but ive loved his music forever..

ive worked with kids aswell (aged 13) and all they know about prince is sinead o'connors version of "nothing compares 2 U", they get freaked out when i mention prince wrote it, and many other hit songs..

but yes, it is a shame, and so is britney spears (yuk)

I am a 21 year old college student and I love Prince! Most of my friends think I am crazy but I think he's brilliant! I love his music and he is damn gorgeous! I remember watching purple rain when I was younger and trying to act out every song: My favorite is "Darling Nikki"!

My students found out about my Prince love on day 1! They thought it was rather funny. Today I was asked what my plans were for the weekend. I told them I was going out with some girls from one of my classes. They then asked, "Are you going to do some Prince karaoke for them?" I then said, "You bet- it makes 'em swoon ever time..."

My kids are the best.
