I cannot believe that so-called music lovers consider music like a sport where there is a number one, a number two etc. This is so fucking stupid.

We're talking about Art. There are musicians more limited technically that express a lot more than fast metal guitarists. Why the fastest should be the greatest? And what about flamenco or bossanova guitarists? What about jazz guitarists? And classical guitar?!

These lists are just plain stupid.

I'm a guitarist myself. One thing I know is Prince has an extremely rare gift. He has the touch, the soul that many pros do not have. You either have it or you don't. You can't learn that. His rhythm guitar play is extremely precise. Moreover I am surprised nobody mentioned Prince is sometimes more adventurous on the guitar than many great bluesmen who play all their career In E mode. He has this instinctive approach of every instrument that is absolutely amazing.

For those who do not recognize his style instantly or think he cannot do any picking on the guitar, please, stop embarrassing yourselves.

Knowing that the guitar is just one side of his numerous skills is quite scary. He is a musical genius. Full stop.

And talking about the other guitarists mentioned, I just feel blessed to live in the same world as the likes of Jeff Beck, Santana, Clapton, Sylvain Luc etc I have decided a long time ago to enjoy their music rather than spending my time trying to subjectively determine who is first and who is last in my book.

No other post on this subject has ever made more sense.

What a shitty list.

But then again, all these lists are shitty.

However, scratch Keith Richards. He plays rhythm very well, but not solo's.

Scratch Slash also. He plays great solo's, but he is one sided and not a great rythm guitar player.

They are just on it because of the stones and guns and roses.

Insert Santana somewhere on top. Why he isn't on this list I can't fathom. What A bloody shame.

Insert Eddy Hazel too.

Also Brian May and John Fruscianti

Given that he's not just a guitarist - but a lot of other things as well - him cracking these lists is pretty nice.

yes, the top guitar players dedicate themselves to it.

IMO they are much better than Prince, but it is quite a statement about his talent that he is compared to them in addition to all the other things he is good at.

He has the touch, the soul that many pros do not have - Thank You. I could not agree more. You cannot teach it or practice it you can only FEEL it!

Another good guturarist that goes unmentioned is the late, Mick Ronson. He played

with David Bowie in the 70's during his Ziggy Stardust days. I don't know why he is

not on this list! I loved his guitar solo on "Moonage Daydream" it was simply incredible.

Kinda remind me of something Jimmie Page would do though I must confess I have not

seen or heard a lot of Page's guitar playing. Anyway, Mick Ronson should have been on

this list! smile

Yes! John Fruscianti for sure!! Oh, and Johnny Marr from the Smiths, and Robert Smith from The Cure!

There are about 2000 more guitarists you could put on that list... Absolutely useless list.

Just to name a few...

Pete Townsend

Django reinhardt

Paco de Lucia

Robert Johnson

Wes Montgomery

Freddie Bryant

Nils Logfren

Sylvain Luc

Julian Bream
Toninho Horta

Baden Powell de Aquino

Andres Segovia

Mark Knopfler

Eddie Hazel

isn't it a list of electric guitar players?

I guess there aren't any females tearing it up?....Im trying to think of some...Joni Mitchell "plays" electric guitar, but it's more of an electric folk.

lists like this shouldnt be taken too seriously...they are only a guide to who is getting praise for their axe skills....of course its a nonsense list...i just liked it because...for once...prince was getting some props for his undoubted guitar skills..so often overlooked by the public at large...not soo much musicians....lots of great guitar players have commented on how good a player prince is.....but if you look at the comments left by the numskulls who only listen to one genre of music....they have no idea of his talents...

I couldn't agree more. Depressed millionaire junkie, blows his own head off, leaving his kids with Courtney Love...? Guy was a complete loser. 'Sorry kids, daddy's too sad. Oh and mommy's a crackhead too, so good luck'. Boo fucking hoo.

I don't agree with anything you said EXCEPT that he does not belong on a list of the greatest guitar players lol

What's to agree with? Almost all of it is fact. Rich grunge rocker/junkie, married to a lunatic, kills himself, leaving his kids with Courtney Love, of all people??! Sorry, but I have NO compassion for anyone with kids committing suicide. He should've worked it out before he had kids or killed himself before he had kids. And Christ, get some help you selfish idiot, you have the money, the resources, and the time...most of which 99% of us don't have. Just tells me how much of a loser he was. Oh and he made some great songs. Waving my Kurt Cobain flag for him...zzzz.
