Prince Knows When People Are Bootlegging? I was listening to The Lovessexy Rehearsals, and on the songs "Controversy" & "DMSR", Prince yells out "cut it off, quick!" Did he catch someone recording the rehearsals?

I am not sure about that set of rehearsals, but in other rehearsals I've seen/heard, I think he's referring to how the musicians end a note. He doesn't want the note to stretch out or fade out, he wants the musicians to cut the end note abruptly for a more dramatic effect. I think it's a staccato effect. Musicians help me out.

um, does that mean Prince invented the Internet and Time Travel? It's a rehearsal thing - in much the same way you don't get a soundboard feed from the auld gwn meic in that Musicology rehearsal vid.
'Cut it right there' is a note to members of the band to remember what to do on the umpteenth repeat of the current song, although i would have to refer to the same bleedin' bootlegged recordin' to see exactly wat you were refferrrinnnggg to

I've always held the point of view that Prince was one of the major reasons why there's a market for boots and the fact that there are boots out there.
To elaborate futher, I've heard he gives this or that song to 'friends' and somehow you have some type of compliation that 'we' get our hands on. The actual concerts is a different story. Someone either records the show for their chair that paid to be a guest at the show like your or I. Also, you'll have someone who's close enough to the soundboard to get the music and then we all know someone records video of so said show too.
That's how my wife and I were able to get some of the recent Welcome 2 America shows that are out now.
Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

I personally believe Prince welcomes bootlegs of unreleased material, he loses no money and fans keep their interest piqued.
If I remember correctly, Moviestar's inclusion on the Crystall Ball set was down to the fact D'Angelo had cited it as his favourite Prince bootleg.

Ur xactly right Fuzzface. I would have 2 say that releases SUCH as Crystal Ball, as well as the ONA box set & the NPGMusicClub was a result of him realizing what was going on and somehow he could capitalize off of it. Then WB puttin' out THE VAULT & THE BLACK ALBUM....so it's no secret.

How does one "capitalize off of" something?

Prince has been very cautious about engineers walking off with his music. In fact, he used to check some of their bags as they left if he felt they were grabbing a tape without permission. He has even fired one or two just because he suspected this.
That said, he makes copies of almost everything he records (previously tapes and eventually CDs) and would leave them around without thinking. He also gives copies to girlfriends as gifts (many songs were recorded for Susannah back in the day and dropped off to her after a fight, etc.), to bandmembers to learn the song and to WB to put in the vault or to be screened by the WB executives.
Rehearsals were recorded so that they could be used if a groove comes out of it that can be used in a new song. These tapes sometimes got left around as well.
I don't think Prince actively puts songs out there to be released on bootleg because the man LOVES to make money and there is no money to be made on that. He isn't going to record something and have another person make the money off of it. That isn't how he works.
On the other hand, I think that Prince enjoys the reputation that his bootlegs make for him as having so many finished songs that sit in the vault. People look at him as an amazing talent and part of that is based on his bootleg legacy. Prince has always been an over achiever and his bootleg collection showcases that very nicely, so I think that it is a double edged sword for him. There is a pride about his reputation but at the same time, he is not happy with his work being sold without him getting to wet his beak. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018.
