These lyrics aren't offensive to me either.

The Peach lyric-Turn a gay Preacher to a sinner. I see this as an illustration of just how hardcore this woman really is. She's all that, to the point of turning a gay preacher straight. I think it's kinda clever actually.

The 2nd-He's gay used to mean he's happy (nowadays happy aint allowed)

That lyric specifically speaks of the "Don't ask/Don't tell" policy of the US armed forces. Nothing offensive there.

As a gay man, I have never been offended by Prince's lyrics. I've been more offended at the religous stuff than anything dealing with sexuality.

Exactly. I completely agree with that. Well, I'm not even
offended by Prince's more religious lyrics these days, they
just annoy me because I'm thinking "Shit, this music is so
fcking tight, why did he have to put such babble over it
instead of writing some clever/deep lyrics".
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

here's some more .."lady cab driver" should have been "person cab driver" ..."let's pretend we're married" is obviously mocking gay ppl because i believe at the time it was written...there were no gay marriages...so all they could do was pretend... "cream" ...the term shaboogey bop ...is latin for "i hate queers" ... "pussy control" implies that the only thing that can have power over a man is a vagina ...an obvious slur..."darling nikki" ...should have been "darling ted" there are countless other examples of prince's attemps to upset the gay community...can anyone think of any more? ..

lol lol

Why do people get offended so easily?

If you listen to the whole song it will present the theme for us.

Chaos and Disorder is showing how something that was innocent or safe has become negative and dangerous.

Car Jack, used to fix flat tires, (today Car Jack means being robbed)

Big Joint, never got you higher, Freebase cost you in the end.

You're played used to mean top 40. (your record is being played on the radio) 40 days of being played ain't proud.
(being played means taken advantage of)

He's gay used to mean he's happy. (The Word Gay meant Happy) today Gays aren't allowed. There is nothing offensive in this.

I really think something is wrong with People. Offended.
How you gonna get my back when you fronting.

Okay, I'm gay and I stopped buying Prince's records after the NPG's Newpower Soul album. I've only recently rekindled my interest after moving home and organising my records into alphabetical order (yeah, I know!)...

There were two songs where I found the lyrics mildly offensive:

01) Peach

The lady in question is so gorgeous that she could "turn a gay"... If that isn't stupid enough, he follows it up with "preacher to a sinner". My heart sank when I heard that line.

02) Chaos And Disorder

"He's gay, used to mean he's happy". Well two points here:
"Gay" had been used to define a non-heterosexual orientation for decades - he used the word himself back in 1980. The definition of "gay" was pretty widespread by the late 60s. Its a stupid inconsiderate line - why even sing it...

The other point is why should he or anyone care what a minority is called or chooses to be called? If somebody else had sung: "Afro-American, used to mean a Yank with big hair", it would have been equally stupid and insensitive.

Homophobia really is the last respectable prejudice.

I won't ever buy The Rainbow Children because I hate ALL religion equally.

But he's still a genius.

You really need to grow a sense of humour and get out of your basement room a lot more.

I don't listen to Peach much because I don't like the song.
But when he says turn a sinner to a preacher, I don't think he was even refering to the gay line.He was just giving another example?

You should buy his records, you are missing out.
I still buy his cds after TRC, and I'm white..

Fair enough... I dunno, I just figured that Prince is 45 this year and he is old enough and ugly enough to make his own decisions smile I don't care what Prince believes in really, I rarely find myself agreeing with him and I doubt we'd be able to have a conversation without killing each other. I just enjoy the music, and there's enough good stuff in there to keep me interested.

Amen! What he said. I'm gonna invest in Ian all that unused emotional energy that used to go to Prince.

Just kidding -- it's a joke!

biggrin I better get some half-assed ill-conceived opinions on stuff and start posting them on my website like Prince does! Oh, wait a sec...

I wasn't put off by the religious content in TRC, but the only thing that left a bad taste in my mouth was the "asimilate the woman first, and only" part.

But I don't let it get in the way of enjoying the music.

The man in entitled to his views, even if I think they are wrong.

I don't get where either of those lines are offensive to gays.

1.) The Gay Preacher scenerio is simply saying the woman is so hot she can turn a gay guy straight, not only that but if that gay guy also happened to be a preacher she could convince him to sin (with whatever naughty sex acts...).

2.) "nowdays 'happy' aint allowed. That could simply mean people are intolerant of gays these days, not that Prince is.

TRC spouts off some crap about women in subjection to her man who is the wise one/conduit to god more or less, which I didn't appreciate or agree with.

After this, the "if the bra fits..." comments, and the general direction he's moving, it wouldn't suprise me if he started dropping anti-gay comments soon. But as of now I can't recall anything offensive to gays in his lyrics.

Why do people take this stuff so seriously anyways... I don't think Prince was directing towards 2 hurt somebody feelings he was just saying things out of fun, if people who stop giving so much attention 2 these it would just go away ... Emenim didn't get big just because he was talented Emenim Got big cuz everybody bitch about his gay bashng lyrics which made people want 2 buy it more

Now ur complaining about Prince being a gay basher, well think about the sentence u just made about religion, what's the difference between what u said about religion and what prince said about gay's in music... think about it about before pointing the finger mad
