Prince and commericals - Why doesn't he license his songs for them? Eminem chrysler commercial is off the hook!
I guess it first aired on the superbowl. Good theme and concept. I don't think it reflects negatively on Eminem at all.
Then I thought about Prince.
Everyone knows Prince likes to make dat money.
No one would consider him a sell out for licensing his music for comemrcials.
How many Prince songs could have been used?
Let's Go Crazy for example. How many commericals can you use that song for?
Or even slow jams like Beautfuil Ones for a hair care product for women.
It's countless. So I have two questions for all of you:
1. Name a song and a commerical idea for Prince?
2. Do you think it's a good idea for Prince do license his music for commericals? Why or Why not?
Hopefully Prince will see this thread. You may laugh, but it's happened before. The man needs to come up with $700,000 to pay some bills. Lets help em y'all!. LOL

I'd like to say he has more integrity, but I actually think it's probably more to do with the fee not being enough.

True True.
Now I kind of drifted away at the time this happend, and excuse my ignorance. What was his involvement in the Uh Huh song? Did it come out that he wrote it? Or did he just do the cover in his unreleased version of it?

Housequake was enough for me. IMO it cheapens the music. Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

This from The Vault...
Coca Cola. This was filed at The Library Of Congress on Oct 22nd 1992. It has been assumed that Prince composed a signature theme for the soft drink company, possibly as part of their deal with their sponsorship of the Act II tour of Europe, yet nothing has ever been confirmed. In fact, close associates and and bandmembers at the time have no knowledge of Prince writing anything for Coca Cola, so this item remains something of a mystery. However, the lyrics, as filed at The Library Of Congress, clearly show that the track was intended as a commercial. "Life is exciting, oh yeah, but when you've got the real thing, it's better. Coca Cola, go get some, it's the real thing, always Coca Cola."

Prince was upset by the music sampling and licensing debacles of the late 1980s and early 1990s. In interviews he brought it up when asked about his fight with Warner Records over his masters. My impression is that Prince knows he could die any day, and when that day comes, he doesn’t want it to be the day after “Let’s Go Crazy” got used in a commercial for Crystal Pepsi.

How does it cheapen the music?
I mean really.
Do reissues cheapen the music? Do re relases off Rhino music cheapen the music? Does giving his music away in newspapers cheapen the music? Do youtube.com spoofs of his songs cheapen the music? Do websites likt this cheapen the music? Does playing music for private parties cheapen the music? Did Prince playing in the Superbowl cheapen the music? Does not paying your taxes or bills cheapen the music?
I would say no to all the above.
I mean Prince is older now. He needs new revenue streams and ways to promote his music. This is one avenue to take. Maybe limit it to a few songs per year.
Also his music can be license for reality shows.
To me it's just good business sense and takes an american icon into a stream he is already in.
I personally would think it was cool to see Prince's music in a commercial. And if Prince did in fact right Uh Huh, then no one can argue.

I don't want Prince's music in a McDonalds commerical or something.

I might be dreaming, but wasn't there a commercial with him singing a live version of Little Red Corvette? I wish I could find it...

Because he probably doesn't want to fuck up his musical legacy and disrespect his own work like that.
In a way, I kinda agree with him - I wouldn't want to hear Peach playing during a commercial for hemmorroid cream.
At the same time, I think he takes it to far with having his vids and stuff pulled from YouTube. That pisses me off to no end. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

Why not he fucks it up in any number of other ways.

Working in advertising I received a few years back an announcement from Universal publishing that they had the rights now for Prince's music to appear in commercials.
Having licensed music from people like Coldplay, Bill Withers, Blondie, Aerosmith for commercials the process is first dealing with the publishing house then getting final sign off from the artists / composer.
In Prince's instance he may be open to it, but may not have seen something yet he has finally signed off on. "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

So all those Versace Experience songs--those aren't ads? He just did those for free? Because I think they "cheapen the music" somewhat....

It does not cheapen anything. What harms a legacy is losing fans. You do that by not showing up for shows, putting out crappy products, etc. The thing in advertising is that they are either reflecting the latest trend or trying to create a new one. Where does Prince fit in on that? We on this site are stated fans of the music. BUT..what products do you see him endorsing that would make a company say "we got to have him"? Musically he is a talent with few equals, but as an endorser...Michael Jordan has infinately more appeal. And because of his signature sound, it is impossible to seperate the man from the music.

There doesnt necessarily need to be an association on a par with Like a Prayer with Pepsi. As a suggestion couldnt Prince make available all his none top 40 music. There surely is a huge list of music that could be used it doesn't have to be an endorsement

Now here comes the problem. Prince has around 30 top 40 songs. List your favorite Prince songs from 1 to 30. What song outside of that 30 will make you want to buy something? "Zannalee"? Will it be worth the cost to the advertiser?
