Your alternative song endings are not really enchanting though, there's too much of a change.

I don't agree that Prince is as obsessed as you say. If you read Vernon God Little, now there's anal fixation for you. As for the rest, Prince has had a heathy sexual appetite and yes, much opportunity to explore that avenue thoroughly.

But I don't understand your thinking in that "Prince should not reinvent his past material publically because others lived it with him."? It almost sounds as if what Prince invented and shared with us makes us public owners of it too. Sure you might have the cd, but live concerts? I don't know the 23 scripture thing you're referring to and I don't know what career path you follow. But I'm sure that there are things you did in a way 25 and 15 years ago, that are not how you do it today. Which is why he probably leaves some alone and reinvents some with new twists.

OK, I'm finally emotionally in the right place to respond to this.

I think Prince does have the freedom to do both, but that he limits himself to some extent.

I think for me the most obvioius distortion of a classic was when he performed "The Christ" live with Larry Graham.

Hearing Larry's deep voice singing those lyrics made me just....well...it made me ill.

Another 3 minutes of my life I won't get back... Pure garbage...I'm in Prince defense mode right now. If people analysed and critiqued your every move as they do his you would develop a few mystery defense mechanisms yourself. He plays the game. He knows how to generate interest in his business. He knows how to pack an arena. At over 50 he's still good at what he does and a lot of people can't stand it. Be positive or be quiet! This is about music not about writing a long book of crap nobody cares about to draw attention to yourself.

But, this rebirth of the flesh so to speak had affects on his artistic statements post-release. That is to say, his older material was rearranged and changed on stage to match his new found beliefs. This is both expected (and not out of line with what Prince has always done), and a bit …unnerving.

Just a dose of allegory and we could have Darlin Nikkie again. Look, Prince may have found a new religion.
