It's all right. My mum bought me a VHS of Prince when I was 5 and I had already heard the "Dirty Mind" album by then, too... she wondered if it were appropriate but I turned out just fine.

Or so I like to think... lol

At Christmas, I take the kids carol singing, going door to door, spreading some cheer and raising money for a good cause. I dress my daughter up as Carmen Electra and my son drags up as Rosie Gaines. I pretend to be Tony M.

If the neighbours refuse to answer the door or donate, we just launch into a couple of choruses of 'Sexy MF'.

We've only been arrested once, and that was for playing a backward recording of verses from The New Translation too loud in a built up area after dark.

Am I a bad parent?

(BTW I hope everything is OK for you, your family and your friends out in New Zealand at the moment)

No you are not a bad parent, but for subjecting your kids to you pretending to be Tony M? Mmm, maybe. lol wink

I have editted a lot of songs so I can play them in the car with my twin 5 year olds.

Nate's favourite song is "No More Candy" and Max loves "The Max"....

My kids are 8 & 6. NEVER did i allow them to listen to Hannah Montana (I forget her other name) she has ZERO talent & I do NOT wish for my kids to see her as an 'artist'. I felt her show was in NO WAY suitable for this age group & banned that too. I gave no other explanation than 'it will make you ears bleed'.

My kids & Prince..... yes, they know most tracks. In fact my son wants to be like Prince when he grows up & my daughter just got see Prince live at MSG. 3 rd row & sang & danced her little heart out.

Prince puts the ART in artist. I tell my children "it's his art, his music & he does it his way. They know his history & now know just how far it can take you.

I did just buy the Justin B cd for them. I read he aspirers to be like Prince in terms of musical ability. I felt that was good enough reason to let him in.

I've been listening to Prince since I was about 8. Honestly, i think his sexuality taught me that sex was to be enjoyed & treated with respect.

What the heck, maybe im just selfish but for as long as im around, Prince will be played smile

Half the reason I want kids is to play Erotic City to them while they’re in the cradle.

My first real album I owned was Purple Rain, I was only 6 then, it was on 8-track and I always loved Prince's music even as a baby. My parents didn't think anything of it. Then my aunt told my mom that the album was backwards and had satanic wording in it and it was taken away sad I would still play it when my partents were out in my ear phones LOL! (yeah our 8 track machine looked like a coffin - who also had one like that in their homes?)

Um... let me warm up my vocals

Well Im 29, and I helped raise my little brother and sister until they were 6 or 7..they seen my Madonna Erotica poster and the Prince shower picture and all...but you know what? They learned to like and appreciate funk music..they know what it is now and download some sometimes too....so something was done right along the way (they are 13 and 15 now).

I don't have any children yet, but when I do I plan on introducing them to Madonna, Prince, MJ, etc. as soon as they're born. At first the lyrics will go right over the kids' heads but when they do start to understand what's going on I hope it'll teach them something in the long run. If not, well - the music is good. wink

The LOOK is the curiosity. That's what pulled me in..then the Linn Drums. I used to ask my mom why he sung 'like a girl' and why he would wear underwear and she used to explain it to me but I didnt understand....it kept me intrested in him.

Its good to teach them the greats

My older cousins introduced me to the Wonderful World of Prince while babysitting me while I was 9. My great uncle Bob bought me each album for Christmas until Purple Rain (when my grandfather took over until LoveSexy).

I have 3 children...23, 21 and 7 and all have grown up listening to Prince. At times I may have been selective which songs I chose to play around them but I never made a big deal out of anything that might have been questionable. Children tend to pick up on things like freaking out over whether a song should be played around them or not.

When my 7 year old son was born I chose not to play traditional baby lullaby's, opting for jazz (Fourplay and Duke Ellington), new and old R&B (Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and all of Prince instrumental works (Kamasutra, Madhouse, N.E.W.S.). His appreciation of music is immense and he constantly surprises me when we are in the car and he starts singing to an old school song that I don't recall every playing for him. In Decemeber I took him to his first concert...Prince and OMG he was as much of a diehard Prince fan as anyone I have chatted with hear on the org. He was singing and dancing, complaining about songs that weren't played, wishing that the opening acts would hurry up and Prince would get on stage.

Prince isn't just for the old diehards but the young diehards too.

You obviously cared enough to post ?

On topic, my son is 11 and appreciates Prince for the genius musician he is, he has heard many of the more "risque" lyrics and is amused at Parental Advisory stickers being a result of Prince's lyrics.

He's not a fan like I am, he likes a mix, mainly chart R & B at the moment, some Eminen.

I'd prefer him to listen to Prince lyrics over Eminem, I find the profanity a little overdone with his (Eminem) stuff, though I don't deny he has talent.

I did. Now they are both teenagers and have moved on to other, worse, music. But they certainly got their fair share of Prince during their formative years.

The other day, I checked my son's Facebook wall, and he did rank Prince's Super Bowl performance as the best Super Bowl performance he'd seen. Yay me! Of course, he would never admit that to me, and he doesn't know I read that, but just as long as I know, that's all that matters.

I was thinking this morning when "Mia Bocca" came on my iPod. Once, when my daughter was about 4, that song came on in the car. In the intro, when Jill says "Hey!" my daughter said it too, complete with echo, right on time.

It was so cool! She never did it again even though I pleaded many times, but I'll never forget it!

Prince is better than most of the music out today. I'm 17 and I discovered him somewhat on my own. I would always hear "When Doves Cry" on the radio when I was younger. When I got older, I asked my mom about him and his music (she only knew his "hit singles" mad ) so I went off to hear more of his music, beyond the "hits". I think more people my age should listen to his music, however most of them are stuck in their habit of listening to Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, etc. Whenever I talk about Prince, my friends roll their eyes. They're the ones missing out.

I took my mom to the January 18 and February 7 shows at Madison Square Garden and she absolutely loved them. I'm getting her into more of his music now, hoping to broaden her musical tastes. She is sort of "re-discovering" Prince now while I'm still learning all I can about him.

I'll definitely let my kids listen to Prince in the future. They need to grow up knowing good music.

First concert: January 18, 2011 & then February 7, 2011 at MSG. Best concerts of my life.
