Original Purple Rain? Though I have been unable to find the unedited, original script or deleted scenes, I've certainly heard of their contents. Does anyone else feel that Purple Rain would have been a more successful film if not made commercially acceptable by Warner? Or do you think the fact that it was revised is what made it such a classic? And together we'll stare into silence. |

What makes you think Warner influenced the content of the film? |

What makes you think Warner influenced the content of the film? Warner distributed the film, I'm sure they had something to do with it's revisions. They certainly must have been concerned with it's critical reception. And together we'll stare into silence. |

I've recently came to the conclusion that Purple Rain (the film, album, and tour) is the best well edited project ever. That's just my opinion. Warner did play apart of the editing of sort for the film. Warner films and the director collaborated with each other on the editing process of the film. They worked together on that part. I mean, if they didn't the movie would have gotten the NC-17 rating. We all know how When Doves Cry made it on to the film and how the director fought for the song (the released version) to stay in the film. Warners wanted Prince to add more instruments on the song and Prince didn't want to. So, he had the director back him on keeping the song the way that we now know it as. I don't think it would have been as successful if they filmed what was in the original script or even the draft that has leaked online. I do think that if they included some of those deleted scene (those things that was in the script that leaked) into the film that it would have made a even better film. The film script that has leaked online is (from what I've read) is the draft created right before they did the final draft of the script. Also alot of that stuff in that script was actually filmed and is part of those deleted scenes. It breaks my heart discussing this stuff because over the years, so many pictures I've seen to confirm that certain scenes were filmed. I think it would have been great. It just haven't been officially released. |

I don't think NR-17 was an option back in the '80s. In its original form, PR was classified as X-rated and it was edited in order to be released within rated R guidelines. Now, if the movie was released today in it's original form, it would easily be a NR-17 rated movie. I feel that there should have been a deleted scenes segment within the anniversary DVD package and if that meant you could only buy it at certain stores, then so be it.
Off-topic a bit....
What I can't stand about movies is when you have all of this stuff going on in the movie trailer and then either not have those scenes or those be the best scenes in the movie. A movie's trailer should be produced after all of it's editing is complete.
Back on topic...
I think that the uncut version of PR could be released as a "Straight to Video" project and people will buy it as if they never seen the released version. It would be a good collector's item regardless of quality. |

Yeah, they where gonna give it the NC-17 rating or an X rating. Damn, I actually put NR-17! LOL! Clearly, that was a mistake! Y'all knew what I was talking about! LOL! I mean, the barn scene was taken out the movie. The first love scene was got some fuss from Warner because they said that was a bit strong. The scene where Jerome throw the chick in the garbage. Warner was fussing about that scene also. If it was released today, I think it would have gotten an R rating. I do agree, the trailer should have been made after the final edit of the movie was done. I think that the movie we have now was put together near the last minute because the trailer had alot more in it. I do think that the deleted scenes should have been included in the 20th anniversary DVD. That would have made it even better. However way they could put it out, it will get brought just because of the content alone and the info behind it. They should include it in the movie and put a director's cut of the movie out. I know that's gonna sell! I'mma buy 3 or 4 myself! |
